Why does canada have military forces in afghanistan?

1. this is clearly a continuing, without end, brutalizing war of aggression, dehumanizing all participants. in the end, a total waste of people, energy, time and vital material.
2. an oil pipe line through afhganistan is of no particular value to the canadian people, would it not make ever so much more economic sense to secure our own resourses, or is this a trade off game we play with our insatiable southern neighbours, in hopes that they will not take all canada's oil and water, once it comes home to them what all this bush and company madness is all about.
3. peak oil is apon us, global polution and warming is a reality. what are we doing using up oil as quickly as we can
to do little more than create massive polution as quickly as we can, shattering lives and social infrastructures as we go?
...pure madness.
bring the children home, learn them to be responsible human beings by having them do things of real consequence and value. what are we doing in afganistan?

We'll never know the real story right now because:

1) Its Afghanistan and its a very very complicated place.
2) In war, truth is always hard to find. (in part because of the chaos of war but also on purpose because controlling information is an important part of military tactics)
3) Even if our decision makers knew the real truth of what is going on, which is doubtful, they still wouldn't tell us.
4) There are more than one or two story-lines happening at the same time.

So if you want a long factual based answer, you're not going to get one no matter who responds to your question.

If you want opinions, there's lots to go around.

If you want the truth, go there yourself and keep searching but even there it will be hard to find.

If you want my opinion, its simply because the Taliban were very very bad people and some of us nice Canadians are willing to risk our necks to help people get out from under their boot prints.

I agree with the first part of your post - that its very difficult to know the exact reasons. Since we can't get the truth, does it make sense sending Canadian troops over to be killed for a unknown cause?

They are there becausee Canada wants supplies of Heroinn for medical use, and much more.
If they are helping the country, why don't they help other countries that really needs help.
nothing is for free. So many are dead for what? helping, dont think so.

I guess as Canadians we all have the right to believe what we want. But when we look at all the money Canada pays out for this war, 18 billion dollars and we are heading for a recession something is wrong here. And all thoes innocent people dying for what, to make G.Bush look good. Harper wake up.
