How many nuclear weapons does the US posses?

We have been hearing a lot about North Koreas ICBM tests. How many weapons does the US have, and why do they need so many?

The United States of America currently has just short of 10,000 nuclear warheads, 5800 of which are active. This is considered more than enough to make the planet of Earth uninhabited by human life if they were used in the correct manner, especially considering they would likely evoke retaliatory nuclear attacks.

WAY too many. NOBODY needs that many. There are enough nuclear warheads in the world to destroy the earth 7 times over. Nice, huh? How STUPID.

The US says that it will not allow for Korea to use "intimidation" with their missiles. Well, what are we doing with our nukes? Isn't that intimidation? I don't know why we still have an excess of nukes. Oh, quick little fact: the planets in our solar system are not all on the same plane.
