Nanotech might have quite a bit of influence on farming. From using wireless nano sensors (Smart Dust) to monitor the soil, stock etc. (link 1) to Pest control etc (link 2)
To producing pharmaceutics using Nanobiotech.

On the other hand all of this is quite speculative. But especially link 2 should provide you with an extensive overview

great answer and good websites. Since we are working with a group of kids ages 9-13, it is a little over their heads. Thanks for the info

Nanotechnology (if it ever exists) potentially has to do with just about everything.

The idea of nanotech is to make machines the size of atoms and molecules that can carry out robot-like operations. So in the field of farming, you might use nanotech to:

    - remove contaminants from soil
    - treat diseases in plants
    - genetically engineer plants
    - alter water flow in farmland
    - produce new arable land by changing deserts and rocky areas
    - produce 'fruits' from raw materials without even growing a plant
    - cause plants to behave differently

And whatever else you can think of. Of course many of these and other such ideas are a bit pie-in-the-sky, and not really likely to replace good, old-fashioned agriculture. But then who knows exactly what the future will bring, neh?

Dumb Me,I thought nanotechnology had to with micro -miniaturization of machines. Unless you want a garden on a postage stamp I can't see a connection.
