When do you think Stephane Dion will stand up for what the Liberal Party believes in and stop abstaining?

I'm completely at a loss for what Stephane Dion is trying to do to build a stronger Canada using a strong opposition if he isn't willing to stand up agains Stephen Harper and the Conservatives.
Here's my take on things:

First of all I read your post, and I agree with you on a lot of points. I personally believe that Stephan Dion is the right leader at the wrong time. The major players we have in the Liberal party today are almost completely different then those we had under Martin's minority, and correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there's a single senior cabinet minister from Chretien's government that's even planning to run in the next election if they haven't retired already.

The Liberals are a little scattered right now, they need a firmer leader, or at least a leader with a firmer hand. Dion is letting his men run wild, one of the many ways that Dion is almost the exact opposite of Stephen Harper (not altogether a bad thing). I mean look at Garneau, first he doesn't here soon enough for his satisfaction whether or not he'll be running in one of the Quebec by-elections, holds a press conference to criticize Dion and the Liberal's for it, and Dion chooses him to run anyways. He's too nice.

I wish he wasn't letting the Conservatives have a free run either, but like one of the other respondents noted, he really is stuck here, much more so than the Bloc or the NDP is. The only upside I can see to this whole mess is that even though Dion is letting Harper have practically a free rein, at least the way things are set up now, if Harper does go overboard and try to do anything too drastic the Liberals can still stop him, although that's not a terribly comforting thought when you consider that if an election were held tomorrow the Conservatives still don't have enough popularity to get a majority.

And for all you morons out there who are using Dion's quote "do you think its easy to make priorities?" as a reason for not supporting him, maybe before be making your decision over which party or politician to support you should take more into consideration then some offhand quote you heard somewhere that doesn't even make sense out of context (or barely in context). Or do you think that Al Gore invented the internet too?

The simple answer is when he thinks he has a hope in hell of actually wining an election. If the government falls now the Conservatives would win with a majority. Unfortunately right now Dion is running scared and Harper can do as he pleases.

A stronger Canada will not be built on the present Liberal Party, as it stands now. It is in disarray, with candidates coming and going, and a leader that doesn't have the charisma that the party thought he would have with the people. Chretien and Martin did the Liberals in, and as a party, the Liberals have a long long way to go before they have a chance of winning an election. The NDP and Bloc have nothing to lose by voting anti-Harper in parliament, but if the Liberals try to shoot the Conservatives down, they'll be shooting themselves in their own foot. I feel sorry for Dion, because he has no good course of action right now. If he votes as Liberals should, he will hurt the Liberals by losing seats in the next election. If he abstains from voting, the Liberals are not using their voice in this parliament. He is truly, truly, stuck, and Harper and his team of schoolyard bullies are taking advantage of it!

I'm voting Green in the next election.

Why would you want a leader who made the statement "do you think its easy to make priorities?" as a leader of a country. Dion is a joke and members his own party disagree with him on many things including Kyoto. His own Deputy Leader said Koyto is a joke, Michael Ignatiff (sp?) Dion made that quote during the Liberal Leaders Debate. Also don't forget that their is still lots of money still unaccounted for by the Liberals. Can you say Gomery Inquiry!!!!. Former Finance Minister Ralph Goodale continues to lie about his budget reports in the House. He was confronted on the issues of net debt, which he claims he never used in his reports. Then theirs the Anti- Terrorism Act that the Liberals supported then flipped flop on that issues. No political party is perfect but its time for a change.

This just shows that Mr. Dion is a weak leader, he could of got up and voted against the PM, but he won't until his poll numbers go up. I just can't see this happening, the PM will get the majority in Quebec, I believe the Liberals will fall even lower than they are now. The Conservatives are federal alternative in Quebec plain and simple. To sell yourself as a party you need a vision not that the Conservatives are the devil and we are not! The Liberals are in a mess and it doesn't look like it is going to change to me. The left may have to go to the NDP. Another point is that if an english politician spoke french as bad as Dion speaks english he would be laughed at. I only have a college education but I need sub-titles when Dion speaks.
