Is Tibet worth visiting or do the cost and the constraints of travel make it more hassle than its worth?

hi ya,
i will be in Nepal in july and would like to go on to Tibet, however it seems you can only get group visas which means you have to enter and leave as a group. by the looks of things you have to book a tour aswell which i'd really rather not do. i will be going to china afterwards and dont mind flying to there first if it makes things easier.
what i would like to know is - is there a way of going to Tibet by yourself and doing your own thing (prob about 3 week visit) without having to pay the earth for tours and visas etc.(does anyone know how much exactly?) or am i resided to the fact that i am too late, that Tibet has already become a theme park with the corresponding price tag?
i have also heard that in Lhasa, i'm not sure about anywhere else, that the sights i.e. monasteries etc have become overpriced and nothing more than a tourist trap. is there any real Tibet left or should i just knock the whole thing on the head and visit one of the buddhist settlements in India

That is a question best asked of yourself but the whole point of travelling is to see what the world has to offer you have the chance to go to roof of the world take it i would. All of these countrys have their downsides food being one of them so I would ask yourself what do I want to see and how much do I want to see it. By the way the bad memories soon fade leaving you with the satisfaction of knowing you have seen it.
