Did President John Adams ever invent something?

Gore Vidal wrote a book about Adams, et al., called "Inventing a Nation." John Adams Whipple was an inventor (and innovative photographer) using chemicals for daguerreotypes. It is possible that someone might confuse his achievments as being those of President John Adams. Thomas Jefferson, who followed John Adams as president, is famous for his inventions.
