welll my wedding was really cheap
my dress costed $30!
we didnt have that many people because i wanted it to be small
we had it at my parents house in the back garden
we had caterors but that didnt cost too much
we didnt get wedding photographers but my dad thinks of him self as a photographer so he took some pretty good shots.
if you want it to be cheap
it can be
good luck and tell your friend congratulations!

My husband and I had a very small church wedding for right around $5000. We didn't do a wedding dance but had a reception (in the church) with a buffet done by a local restaurant. We opened gifts at that time and were able to really spend time with our guests.
If your friend wants REALLY cheap, she can go to the justice of the peace for the ceremony and book a party room at a local hotel/event center for the reception.
You really need to figure out what are her absolute "have to haves" and spend money on those things. For instance, if she loves flowers but could care less about rice/birdseed/bubbles, then just spend money on flowers.
We also did a lot of the decorations ourselves, and purchased things on ebay (my brand new wedding dress was only $100 and I pd another $25 to have it tailored at a local store). You have to watch out for scams (do price comparisons between what things cost in stores and what you can get them for on ebay).

Cake and coffee or lemonade/iced tea/punch. Don't serve alcohol since that will make costs jump and shouldn't be served with sweets anyway unless you want drunk guests (having only sugar in someone's stomach will make the alcohol enter their bloodstream faster than normal, resulting in getting drunk quicker than they would otherwise). Have it either in the afternoon or after dinnertime in the evening.

What first should be done is have her set a budget. How much money is she willing to spend for the whole shabang? Then plan the wedding with that cost in mind. Reception is usually the most expensive part of a wedding. A backyard BBQ could be had in place of that. Look at your local department stores for white dresses. Have the groom wear a suit..even if you have to buy a new suit, buy something he could wear again to a job interview or another event.

use a family members home, no alcohol, finger foods only, no bridal party- just the couple. Use garden flowers as decoration, have a friend photograph.
