Is it really important to have a social network presence?
People keep saying that you need to have a social network presence, and you have to be on places like Facebook and the like. My question is, is it really important to have a social network presence? If so, why? I think all it achieves is to show you that your old friends now have new friends and don't give a crap about you anymore. Is it important to be on the social networks?

Definitely not a necessity, but depending on who you are and what you do, it can certainly be handy. For instance, a lot of my friends will invite people to parties over facebook, and it's honestly just more copnvenient than mailing out 100 invitations or phone calls, y'know?
Also, just an example, I'm going to college for the first time in the fall, and the admissions director made a facebook group for all incoming students where we could ask questions and meet each other, etc.
A lot of people use it as a popularity contest, but if you don't take it too seriously, there's a definite upside.

Social networks are certainly popular among the youth nowadays, but it's a preference (and an obsession for some), certainly not a necessity. So I'd say no, maintain a connection with your friends in the real world and use other means of connecting as a rare alternative. Nothing beats actually meeting someone face-to-face.
