Safe place to stay in Fort-Lauderdale?

Question

Going down in december, looking for a hotel on beach, shopping, close to restaurants as we wont be driving.
Was wondering if pompano beach was a good area, also is pompano beach close to the hilton marina as we have friends there.

Pompano Beach is about 10 miles north of the Fort Lauderdale Hilton Marina. I'd look closer at the beach area of Fort Lauderdale, just a couple of miles east of the marina. There's a lot more happening on the beach at Fort Lauderdale than Pompano Beach.

No pompano is not close to the Hilton marina and you´ll need a car to get there... Actually I really recommend a car in any case because it makes everyting so much more accessible.

If you absolutely won´t drive, there´s a "Sun trolley" tourists use for a low fare and that goes around the points of interest in Ft Lauderdale. I´ve never taken it but I´ve seen it frquently. On the internet: www.suntrolley.com

Also there´s the Water taxi, that can take you from the beach to downtown Las Olas. It´s actually a water Bus as you pay a flat fare and ride it all day long among other tourists. You can look it up at www.watertaxi.com

One more thing about Pompano: yes it´s safe (on the beach)but it´s so boooring! I think you´ll have more fun at ft Lauderdale!
