What happens when 50:1 mixture is not used and can it be remedied?
My bonehead brother-in-law bought a leaf blower a few seasons ago and he admitted that he's never put in the "gas additive" (his words) so he's been running on pure gas ever since. Now it's really tough to start and runs poorly if it does. Does anyone know a) why the fuel mix is important and how I can communicate that to him and/or b) how can we remedy this and save his blower?
Thanks!

Because unlike a four stroke engine (like a car) a two stroke does not have a separate oil reservoir. The oil/gas mix is what lubricates the engine and keeps it from seizing up.
If you can't get it started or it runs poorly when it does start, he has blown the engine and needs to get a new blower.
If he can't follow operating instructions, he needs to get an electric blower that he can just plug in and tote the cord around.

Explain to him that the oil additive is for lubrication of the engine. No lubrication and the engine wears out quickly and will not start or runs poorly due to leakage of where the cylinder wall is scored and/or missing no compression.
If this does not work look at him and say DUH!!!
