Can a breakup be the same as losing a loved one through death?

Question

I was thinking about this a couple days ago and remembering telling my ex I didn't want to lose him. His response was he is not a loss because it isn't like someone died.

Do anyone think this is true or not?

Additional Details

To the second poster, I'm aware that physical death means the person is gone forever from this planet, so in that sense, no it isn't the same. basically I want to read other people opinions on it and if they believe (or not) the steps of mourning over a breakup is similar to death.

Breaking up with someone and losing a loved one to death are pretty close to the same feeling emotionally. The only difference is at least in death you know they are gone forever so you can mourn the loss knowing they are gone forever. In breakups the person may be out of your life for now, but who the hell knows for how long that will last.

Well it is like a loss. When someone dies in your family you most likely will cry and grief but it's because you ahd lvoe for this person; like you would with your boyfriend or spouse.

If it was a random person dying it wouldn't affect you as much, meaning your boyfriend hopefully is more than just a random person.

Sorry to say this but apparently your boyfriend wouldn't care much if you guys broke up. Think about it, meaning if you guys broke up, he wouldn't cry or feel bad. In the relationship is he the sentimental type? Does he tell you he loves you and never wants to lose you?

Um, Different kind of hurt but can be just as devastating. Especially if it's been a long term thing.

I think he was just being technical. The word loss is mostly associated with death.

Death means they are gone for good,

Friendships can persist through a break up.
