Should a 16 year old be able to drive with a friend?

So I'm 16....I will be 17 in December and I got my license in January...I drive to school everyday and back so I'm really used to driving completely. But, today I took my friend shopping after school (I called my mom and told her I was going, i didnt mention my friend) and then when I got home, I told her my friend came too, in my car. She got really mad and said NO ONE could ride with me at all, not because i didnt tell her but because i shouldnt be allowed to drive with anyone else in the car. Does this sound fair? I know that everyone I know takes peoples places...I dont understand why I cant because she knows Im a responsible driver. Thanks.

she's probably really worried at the chance that you DO get into an accident. b/c if u did by urself, she'd just have to worry about you. but if ur friend is in the car, that deffinitely changes things..ALOT.
if it matters that much to you, next time, don't tell her!!

thanks for your answers...she and my dad agreed that as long as its just one person it will be ok now...thanks
I was going to say that in South Carolina it is illegal for a 16 year old to drive with anyone in the car. Other states are different, but the reason is that 16-18 year olds have 20% of the drivers licenses, but 50% of the accidents.

In some places it's actually illegal for you to do what you did, as part of the graduated license program. You may want to check that.

Other than that, Momma makes the rules, don't you know that? It's not about you being responsible at all, it's about her being scared for your life (Cars are dangerous you know). Give her time, she'll get over it.
