There are programs called the Beer Judge Certification Program, and the Cicerone program. I would look into those. BJCP is an all out certifiying exam process that will school you in the styles and nuances of beer, i.e. color, aroma, mouthfeel, bitterness, flavor... etc as well as some history and recipe design. You can then volunter to judge at various beer competitions sponsored by the American Hombrewers Assocation and the Brewers Association.
The Cicerone program is more focused towards people in the bartending industry, but can also be invaluable to gaining a key perspective to the delicious fermented beverage known as beer.

The definitive expert in this field was Michael Jackson (no, not that one) so you should start with his books. As well as having to have a thorough understanding of how beers are made, the global variations and the business you are also going to have to drink a lot! Good luck.

Read all you can on the subject. Taste a lot of beers, keep notes on what you try. Visit some breweries. Try your hand at making your own (it's not hard).
