What is a good knife set for a new chef?
I'm in culinary school, starting out but I want a set that professional chefs use. What are some good brands to look at?

Can't go wrong with Wusthof, or any other German firm. What you want to look for: forged construction (as opposed to stamped), full tang construction, triple riveted handles, High-carbon stainless steel. Composition handles (*not* wood!).
I personally do not find that the ultra high-priced knives afford any advantage, other than high profits to the manufacturers. Personally, I use the Henkel brand (also German, with all of the above features), and a lot of others do, too.
If you are just starting out, you might wish to consider getting a set of knives that is decent but not overpriced. If you really feel strongly about it, you could upgrade later to one of the really pricey brands. Although I really don't see much advantage in that.
And best of luck!
