Why do bugs flip on their back when they die or are dying?
It's weird. I mean... why don't they just lie flat on their bellies?

The very simplistic answer is it depends on what they have died from and the general shape of their body.. some insect baits that were used would have the insects die on their feet, with their butts up in the air. Most common insecticides effect the contraction of the muscles and due to the shape of many insects (top heavy) they would find themselves on their backs unable to flip back over

- It makes sense... especially since the reason I asked is because we sprayed for bugs and now we are finding them everywhere on their backs.

The thing is, some bugs crawl on walls and ceilings, you know? So if they were to fall off, they sometimes land on their backs and can't get up. That's why they die, so they are still in that position when they're dead. So sad. :(
