Just got braces and i can't bite down!?

k i literally can't bite down at all no teeth make contact or come close. he put a metal attachment onto the inside of one of my top front teeth so that i wouldn't bite the brackets off. the problem is that i cannot eat anything at all. so i can only have liquids for half a year until my teeth touch...**** THAT!!!! and there is noway to get around it it's not like i can just eat soft foods because my teeth won't close it just hits the shelf and it hurts like hell. i can't chew with my front teeth because they're so tensed together, because of the braces, that if i just gently push down on one front tooth itll hurt every tooth in my mouth (cept the molars). also the shelf is only on one tooth and only makes contact with one tooth both of which are very very sensitive teeth. so all my bite power hits 1 tooth against metal and sometimes i forget about it and try to bit down fully which hurts like a mothaf%$ker. i also tend to knee myself in the chin alot (havnt yet so far) but if i hit my chin those teeth are gonna be knocked out like nothing.
oh also when i say that i can't eat anything but liquids (drinking) this is not an exaggeration, i can't eat anything whatsoever.

Give your orthodontist a call and tell him your concerns. The soreness and sensitivity will go away after a few days, so that part will get better. But having none of your teeth making contact- I've never heard of that. Maybe that metal attachment is something that you'll only need in the very beginning stages of treatment? Hopefully ;-)

I work for an orthodontist. I'm office staff, not chairside, so I'm not an expert on this. But I know in our office sometimes in the beginning we will just put on upper braces, or only lowers, if we think the patient will bite them off. That way we can start to position the teeth that do have the braces in such a way that when we put the rest of the brackets on months later the teeth will be in a position where you will not bite them off.

I think it's completely unacceptable that you cannot eat any solid food for over a year. Who would be able to do that? It's crazy! So if if your doc has a plan, like maybe this is only for the first month or something. If not, then I'd go to another orthodontist for a 2nd opinion. Sorry about your luck, that sounds horrible ;-(
