Antibiotics often have that effect. You needed to tell the doctor that you were on the pill, and he would have told you to be careful.

Advice for now is to see a counsellor who can go through all the options with you.

I don't think they how or why really matters now...just be happy that the baby is ok with all of the medication you were on.

Birth control pills contain estrogens. Some antibiotics, e.g., rifampin, griseofulvin, cause the enzymes in the liver to increase the break-down of estrogens and thereby can decrease the levels of estrogens in the body and the effectiveness of the pills. This can result in unwanted pregnancy. Therefore, individuals taking birth control pills should use a second method of birth control when taking these antibiotics or other drugs that can increase the break-down of estrogens.

Antibiotics can cause the birth control to not be as strong.Did your dr. not know you were on it? even on the pack instructions it tells you some Med, can make the BC not be as strong. You should have been using a condom especially during the time you where taking the med.. I am on BC and my fiance and I still use one.

Some Methods Work Better Than Others
Some birth control methods work better than others. The chart on the following page compares how well different birth control methods work.

The most effective way to prevent pregnancy is abstinence. However, within the first year of committing to abstinence, many couples become pregnant because they have sex anyway but don't use protection. So it's a good idea even for people who don't plan to have sex to be informed about birth control.

Couples who do have sex need to use birth control properly and every time to prevent pregnancy. For example, the chart below shows that the birth control pill can be effective in preventing pregnancy. But if a girl forgets to take her birth control pills, then this is not an effective method for her. Condoms can be an effective way to prevent pregnancy, too. But if a guy forgets to use a condom or doesn't use it correctly, then it's not an effective way for him to prevent pregnancy.

For every 100 couples using each type of birth control, the chart shows how many of these couples will get pregnant within a year. The information shown is for all couples, not just teenage couples. Some birth control methods may be less effective for teen users. For example, teenage girls who use fertility awareness (also called the rhythm method) may have an even greater chance of getting pregnant than adult women because their bodies have not yet settled into a regular menstrual cycle.

We list the effectiveness of different birth control methods based on their typical use rates. Typical use refers to how the average person uses that method of birth control (compared to "perfect" use, which means no mistakes are made in using that method).

For us to consider a birth control method completely effective, no couples will become pregnant while using that method. Very effective means that between 1 and 2 out of 100 couples become pregnant while using that method. Effective means that 2 to 12 out of 100 couples become pregnant while using that method. Moderately effective means that 13 to 20 out of 100 couples become pregnant while using that method. Less effective means that 21 to 40 out of 100 couples become pregnant while using that method. And not effective means that more than 40 out of 100 couples become pregnant while using that method.

In addition to preventing pregnancy, abstinence and condoms provide some protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). However, most other birth control methods do not provide much protection against STDs, so condoms should also be used

    Birth Control Methods: Comparison Chart

Method of Birth Control How Many Couples Using This Method Will Get Pregnant in a Year? How Well Does This Method Work in Preventing Pregnancy? Can This Method Also Protect Against STDs?
Consistent Abstinence None Completely effective Yes
Birth Control Patch ("The Patch") 8 out of 100 Effective No
Birth Control Pill ("The Pill") 8 out of 100 Effective No
Birth Control Ring ("The Ring") 8 out of 100 Effective No
Female Condom 21 out of 100 Less effective Yes
Male Condom 15 out of 100 Moderately effective Yes
Birth Control Shot 3 out of 100 Effective No
Diaphragm 16 out of 100 Moderately effective No
Emergency Contraception 1 to 2 out of 100 Very effective No
IUD Fewer than 1 out of 100 Very effective No
Fertility Awareness 25 out of 100 Less effective No
Spermicide 29 out of 100 Less effective No
Withdrawal ("Pulling Out") 27 out of 100 Less effective No
Not Using Any Birth Control 85 out of 100 Not effective No

Choosing a birth control method based on how well it works is important, but there are other things to keep in mind when choosing a form of birth control. These include:

•how easy a particular birth control method is to use
•how much a particular birth control method costs
•whether a person has a health condition or is taking medication that will interfere with how well a particular birth control method works

I was a young mom too. Not quite as young :) tho.

Its tough. Did you tell your man yet? Just assure him its all going to be ok. Because it will if you truly dedicate your life to being a good mother.

Ask your mom a TON of questions. Show her that you love this baby and it will make her feel better. My mom was so upset because she thought I was missing out on my youth. In some ways I did but I wouldn't change it for the world.

Think of it as living your life backwards. Work now, play later. When your baby is 18 then you will still be young and you can actually relive some of the freedom you lost.

Nobody would ever choose this but whats done is done so make the best out of it and you find find peace and happiness.

Just don't be one of those young moms who dumps their baby on the grandparents. I hate that. Try to go to school. Be respectful and helpful as much as you can to them (do dishes, laundry, cleaning, no bratty nonsense, and get a job for as long as possible, go to school till you can). Because I bet they are willing to help and thats how you can show your appreciation.

Also, keep boyf involved. Bring him to doctors visits, shopping, birth classes and such. If he doesnt want anything to do with it he doesnt have to. Plenty of moms out there are single moms. He will just have to pay child support instead.

Also, dont forget you have options. NOT abortion, but adoption. I was adopted and live a great life. I have the most loving mother a girl could ask for. I know my birth mom too and im so thankful she gave me up because she didn't have the means to take care of me.

I kept my baby because I knew in my heart I would regret giving her up and I really believed my boy and I could do it. And we did!

Now we are pretty much caught up to everyone else. We own a car and a house. Im still a stay at home mom and my husband owns his own business. We have just a little money but make it ok. And im only 20. 5 years from now i expect us to be doing even better.

    Good luck! Be brave

You are supposed to take the pill at the same time every day.
Also, birth control can sometimes react to antibiotics, and stop working. It depends on what you were taking.
So there was a high risk of pregnancy.
You should never have unprotected sex anyway.
    I'm sorry to hear this.
Hope all goes well for you,
    Good Luck
