Why does my scalp hurt after taking my hair down from a ponytail?

I've just always wandered this. I remember asking my teachers about it when I was in school when I was younger, but don't ever recall getting a straight answer. My daughter asked me about it today and I honestly didn't know. So, why DOES your scalp hurt when you take down a ponytail or take a barrette from your hair?

Thanks in Advance.

It is because your hair is being pulled from the opposite direction it naturally wants to go. This happens to me some times so i just give myself scalp massages and bear throught the pain :)

I knew that that's what caused it, I just wonder why exactly it causes pain. Is it the roots causing all those little nerve endings to hurt or is it the actual scalp that is somehow manipulated and causes the pain. I guess I'll never know! lol Thanks for answering.
