Does anyone know how to brine a fresh ham?

I had to buy a fresh ham, but I need a city (cured) ham. Considering Thanksgiving is almost here, I had to get what the butcher had in stock, which was a fresh ham. I need to cure it so it'll taste like ham versus just a big pork roast. :) Does anyone know a recipe for brining fresh ham? I found a few on line, but they call for something called a Prague cure (contains sodium nitrate). Is there a way to do this without this ingredient? Does anyone have a recipe?

Unfortunately, I think you're correct. My husband went to the grocery store and bought a cheap brined ham. I hope to God the seasonings/rub I put on it before baking will make it taste somewhat like real ham and less like the "water added" that they brag about on the label. Hmph.
