"it's your emotions, you're the one who should be dealing with it not me"?

would you feel offended if someone you like says that to you after telling that person you like him/her? or would you think, in the end, it's nicer because he/she doesn't want you to have false hope compared to him/her beating around the bush?

I seem to have shocked a person in another section when I have given that as an answer to a particular question.

What you wrote is basically a fact: our emotions are ours, so, we have to deal with them on our own.
However, your approach was rather direct and can easily be misunderstood as an offense.
That's what we encounter all too often:
We say or write something in a direct way, and they tell us we are rude and inconsiderate.
We say the same thing carefully, and they don't understand or complain about us being too indirect.
In daily life, if you have real interest in that person, let him or her know what you meant, try to find out what he or she understood, and explain a little bit more. That clarifies a lot.

that same line can also be said in a non-offensive way, believe me.
