By either kissing someone with a cold sore or preforming oral on someone with genital herpes.

Most people catch it as children - from kissing relatives. It's usually spread through skin-to-skin contact (so ... kissing), but it can be spread from sharing lipstick or drinks. But the virus dies quickly once its away from the body, so to catch oral herpes from an object you would need to use it RIGHT after someone who was infected.

Most of the time from innocently kissing or being kissed by a family member or friend that has cold sores, this can happen during child hood even before you become sexually active. Facial herpes is what causes cold sores, they rarely come from having sex.
