Bad Dreams Problem??

i have a problem ..... im 15 years old and i don't know whats wrong, every time i go to sleep i have terrible nightmares, and they keep getting worse and worse , either i have a night mare or don't dream atal, and there not normal nightmares they seem real and are fairly graphical and i can't take it anymore. i wake up and have to lay there for like half an hour until i can go back to sleep or the dream will continue, i can usually take them pretty well , i don't go all day thinking about it but it seems like they are getting worse and im beginning to think about them during the day, and this has been going on for almost a year and a half now, i haven't told anyone because its fairly embarrassing. so help me, what can i do to have a good dream for once????

and please no immature answers, i really want some help and no one tell me to go see a therapist or ill report you !!!!! im serious... only serious answers!!!

Hi Steven.

I'm sorry you're having such a rough time with all these nightmares. I've heard that a nightmare is the minds way of coping with stress. Now I'm not trying to get all in yout business, but if you are feeling stressed about something, school, home life, a girlfriend, etc, that might be triggering these dreams.

Also, have you tried looking at a dream interpretation site to maybe see if there are any meanings to your dreams?

This is a good site:

www.dreammoods.com They have a dream dictionary there that helps decipher dreams and nightmares.

I hope I could help you.

This is a most sincere answer, and it's not a joke. A few decades back there were similar reports of people having terrible nightmares, which caused them to do anything within their power to stay awake. These people later died of inexplicable reasons. The reports were the base for the horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street. Ignoring that, I would seriously try and talk to someone about it.

You might laugh at me, but there is a natural sleep aid, melantonin (you can buy it at wal-mart) and i don't have bad dreams at all on it. I used to have really bad dreams. Like, i would wake up crying and wouldn't sleep for four nights and they were all i could think about in the day

I also have realistic, terrifying nightmares that seem to have a life of their own, and go on & on. One thing that helps me if I wake up and feeling fearful, is to change the story so that I or someone else becomes a hero and rescues the situation. If I can't get back to sleep and can't stop thinking about the dream, I will get up and have a small glass of milk or water, might read something light hearted or funny (I set a time limit because I need my sleep) and try to get back to sleep thinking only of good events or things in my life. Sometimes I write my dreams down to see if I can figure out the personal message my brain is trying to give me. I've read that dreams are a necessary way for our brains to cope with all the input we put in our minds every day. We are not to take them too seriously as it is an essential part of our sleep process. Everybody dreams. Some people don't remember them, but they have them, otherwise it will be detrimental to their health. My husband has only remembered waking up from a dream once in all his adult life and couldn't remember what it was about when he got up in the morning. I'd rather have my dreams even if it includes nightmares, as I've had such interesting, beautiful dreams with the most spectacular colours! Maybe write yours down - might lead to interesting reading, maybe a book!? I don't think you should be embarrassed about your nightmares. It might be interesting if you put forth the question to a group of friends. You could say you are taking a poll as to who remembers theirs, who doesn't; who dreams in colour (some of mine are black, shades of greys and white) and who has nightmares & how frequently. It could get very interesting, maybe can do a project/research for an essay at school or something. You do not have to divulge what your nightmares are about if you want to keep them private.
I have learned that what you eat before going to bed can make a difference. When I have a snack of cheese it seems like I have action-filled dreams. Here's wishing you sweet dreams, Steven!
