not to say anything about people who work at mac and i might be wrong (please tell me if i am, i do not like giving false facts) but they get training on makeup, not face care. not everything can be solved with makeup, you have to start at the skin. making the skin more manageable will make the makeup better
do you use a toner? after washing one should always use an alcohol-free toner to help bring back the hydrolipidic film that was washed away. the film helps hydrate and protect the skin from bacteria, free radicals, and pollution. normally it takes 3-4 hours for the hydrolipidic film to get back to normal, so that is three hours without protection. biotherm's line of skincare for oily skin (purple) has a small amount of starch to absorb the excess oils.
for foundation, do not use a powder that has minerals in it. it takes away the moisture of the skin as well as the oils. this can make the skin dehydrated and start flaking even though you have an oily skin type. many people mistake dehydrated skin(lack of water) for dry skin (lack of oils) so they cake on the moisturisers and get a lot of oils but not enough water (like in the winter) and this causes a lot of women to break out.
do you use a primer? the only one that i would ever suggest would be smashbox. it's primers hold the top 4 places for primers in north america and the 5th place has so much water in it, it's barely a primer! (i only recommend that to people who have acne problems because it helps treat redness and is an anti-inflamatory. if you want to know the product just contact me) the water in your product will only evaporate and pull water that the skin has retained and make the makeup look cakey. this goes for adding water over top of foundation. the point of using finishing powder is to mattify the look. putting water overtop just pulls off the makeup and will make the foundation run faster. if you want that "fresh" finish let me know. i can suggest TONS of product other than water that will actually last
for an oilier skin i would say use the photo finish primer LIGHT because it is more mattifying than their origional. primers help the foundation go on smoother and last longer. smashbox's primers have so many vitamins and natural oils (these are non-irritants and non- clogging oils that do not count for the 0.01% of oils in the primers. did you know that for a product to be named "oil-free" it has to have less than 0.5% oils that are not natural?) that this could be used as a serum to treat unhealthy and dehydrated skin
they have two other mattifying products. one is a liquid. it is VERY multipurpose! you can use it as a lip primer to stop lipstick from bleeding, as an antipersirant (what they use in smashbox studios [who do 98% of all advertisements in magasines] to avoid getting the expensive clothes dirty and give them that yellow stain), or as a mattifyer before makeup. if you want a touch up use their compact anti shine. you just blot it on and it does not take off your makeup
if you do want coverage, and feel better with a powder, go with smashbox halo. it is a hydrating powder that is SO soft and luminescent and gives a radiant glow to the face. now it IS 75$ if you get it in retail... BUT keep in mind that this product is the size of 5 normal compacts. if each compact costs you $15-20, then after you buy 5, you will have paid $75-100 for cheap quality. why not spend that money on GOOD quality?
if you would feel more comfortable using a liquid foundation with little coverage, try their tinted moisturisers. if you want more coverage, try camera ready full coverage. they have a distince way to put the camera ready full coverage foundation on. if you want tips just let me know and ill give you the secret ;)
if you still feel that the prices are high, go on ebay. you will be able to get almost all of smashbox's products for real cheap. just make sure that it states that the product is not used, is sealed, and their feedback is good (you do not want to be buying from someone who has had a lot of bad feedback)
