Why does physical beauty matter so much? Is that what you think is going to make your relationship last?

I have never really understood this. It has never mattered to me. So please explain: Why, when it makes no difference to the longevity or quality of your relationship, is physical appearance so important to so many people?

Unfortunately in today's world looks is ALL that matters. Some people even make a career out of it, they get jobs based on their looks. It is sad but the media is the one to blame for this. The prettier your partner that longer it would last. Which is so not true. But i guess as long as we have the media we would have failed relationships.

Physical beauty to me is mostly important in the initial stages of attraction.

Lets be honest, physical beauty is what catches our eyes first. It hooks us and captures our attention. Without it, there would be no initial conversation, first date, kiss, engagement, or marriage.

For me I understand that all of us are only getting older and that physical beauty is not everlasting. However I would be concerned if say my girlfriend just let herself go for no reason. You don't have to be a swimsuit model but stay in reasonable shape. Half an hour of exercise a day or every other day is not very difficult to do. I would never cheat on her but I would kindly bring up the issue that we should workout together.

If it's just sex, all that matters is looks (or enough alcohol). But this is not to be confused with what I need in a *relationship*.. For relationships, personality is important too. But looks are still important because the difference between a friend and partner is the fact that partners have sex with each other... My friend's physical beauty doesn't mean a damn thing to me because I don't need them to arouse me in bed.

Of course, there are some people who don't care about their own looks and get with other people who don't care about their looks... that's fine.
