It sounds like you have a stupid mother-in-law. Hopefully your wife does not take after her mother. Tell your wife you love her and ask her what is up with her mother. Maybe she needs more meds.

Well... Do you love your wife?
In your defense, it is a mistaken idea to think that a husband needs to fight his wife's battles for her.
This is her mother for crying out loud! Why should you need to protect you wife from her own mother? I'm sure that if someone outside of your family began yelling at your wife, you would have stepped in.

Apologize to you wife for your mothers disrespect, for you not standing up for her, tell her your love for her is more than any other woman in the world and kiss her deeply.( Like you did after you said your vows and "I Do")
In front of your mommy.

You should take control of the situation and not allow your mother-in-law to have so much control. You will have to stand up to her, but not in a disrespectful way. It also sounds as if your wife keeps her mother too much into your marriage and hasn't "severed the cord". Actually, its more about your wife, and less about your mother-in-law. You need to talk to your wife!

That is absolutely ridiculous. I would have jumped in if my mother did that to my hubby. No good!

mother in laws can be harsh i know that my mother in law, can be a bit much sometimes, she says things to get my husband row-led up and i have got in her A** about it. You need to tell your mother in law to stay in her place you need to sit down and have a talk with her about where you 2 stand plus, you dint like the assumptions she makes about your relationship!

Yes, let her know that it's her behavior in the situation is what is questionable, not yours. That being manipulative, regardless of the reason, isn't acceptable to you.

My husband once called the cops on my mom because she was upsetting me in our house. Maybe that's what your mother in law was looking for?
