What are some of the things you can do to create a backyard when you are on a hill?
I am thinking about purchasing a home that really has no backyard or front yard because it is on a hill, but in my head I imagine us chopping off the hill to create an even ground and doing something with it to make it a sort of patio feel type of backyard. Atleast then it would be more space that it is now with just a small deck. Is this something that can be done? What are your recommendations for a backyard as such?

A POND!!!! You can have a stream and waterfall running down the hill over boulders and around drift wood, and plant fern's, baby tears and other green foliage to give it a woodsy look, i would do that and i did.
You can choose to have a koi pond, with beautiful pet koi which eat out of your hand! Or have a pondless water feature.

There are a couple of different directions you can take. You could build various retaining walls and level off some areas for a yard or raised gardens (the hill will give you excellent drainage and there are many fruits/vegetables/flowers that require good drainage), or you could build a raised deck with raised posts and even plant something underneath (there are many plants that like the shade).
A lot depends on how much area you have and how steep the hill's incline is (and which plants depend on your climate/growing zone).
