How to fix hole in bluejean pants?

I'm giving my old maternity clothes to my friend. One of the maternity pants has a hole in the knee. I tried sewing it up twice when I was pregnant, but when I sat on the floor and had my knees bent (indian style), the hole opened up or a new one would rip just below the hole I sewed up. So how to I fix this with out it ripping when my friend wears them?

Iron on patches, then sew them into place, be certain to round the corners. It does sound like the material is worn out since it keeps ripping next to the patch.
