Instead of just trying to eat a lot, in order to gain mass you need to eat a lot, but you also need to work out by doing weight training. If you just eat without working out it will continue just going to your stomach. There really isn't any reason to be shy about going to the gym, I'm short and skinny also. I'm basically puny compared to some of the people that go there, but also a lot of people that go there will be older and out of shape. Basically, not everyone there is going to have a gym body, which is exactly why they go to the gym. Eat healthily, but add more calories to your diet by eating foods high in calories such as nuts, avocados, eggs, etc. and working out by lifting weights.
