More beer, per capita comes out of the Portland area than any other city in the nation. It has numerous microbrews, several distribute nationally. Beer in Portland is basically a staple.

It has more (if not the most) breweries. There are many, I can't even think of most of them. Widmer, Pyramid, Hair of the Dog, Deschutes, Hopworks, Amnesia, Laurelwood and on and on. Homebrewing is huge there too.

However, most of the breweries make pretty underwhelming brews. If you like huge, flavorful, powerful beer, Hair of the Dog is the only major player. Some others make a decent one now and then, but their biggest sellers are bland.

A final reason is that they do bring in some top quality beers around. Belmont Station has over 10,000 different beers, Horse Brass has an excellent selection, as does Henry's 12th Street Tavern. Not all brewed in Portland, but brought in from all over the world.
