What can I substitute for an aebleskiver pan?

Before I spend a lot of $ on an aebleskiver pan, I'd like to try the recipe first. Is there anything that I can substitute for the pan? I have a cast iron frying pan. I was thinking of using a muffin pan in the oven but don't know if it will be hot enough.

Hey Razz- thanks.
That's a lot of stuff for $10. I can always sell it for a couple bucks on Craig's list if I don't like aebleskivers! :)

What are you trying to make? Why wouldn't a muffin pan be hot enough?

Those pans are expensive. I wanted one, but then thought about how many times I'd really and truly make those lovely little filled spheres of deliciousness, and decided the answer was, "Not often enough to justify spending that kind of money." If you want to make filled pancakes, just make filled pancakes - they're easy enough. I don't know how well a muffin pan would work unless you have one with perfectly straight-sided cups. The cups on mine are sloped and would not work.

I'd be careful of a $9.99 pan - it might be lightweight aluminum. But hey, if it's nice and heavy, what a bargain!!
