What's a good brand of Scotch?

Question

It needs to be moderately available, as while there are several well-stocked liquor stores in my area they don't have nearly everything, and ideally it should be around $25 but I could go a bit higher. Nothing over $40.

My favorite is Famous Grouse ($22.00), but there are others available as well. Glenlivet 12 Year
Single Malt is also quite good, but is more expensive than your stated price (around $50.00), as is Oban 14 year Single Malt at nearly $80.00 per fifth. I recommend you stay away from J&B; it will leave you less than satisfied (at least it did me).

Try Macallan, its way better than Johnny Walker.

I don't think you're going to get a good single-malt scotch around $25.00. The least expensive I see (well, up here in Ontario) is $31, and that's a McClelland. Go for an Islay for a smoky, peaty flavour.
You can get some around $40, but a good one, like a Lagavulin 16-yr-old or a nicely aged Macallan, is going to run you around $120.
