I'm guessing you're asking about the Cell Biology term. This term refers to transfer of any molecule across a membrane.

In biological terms, this could be within transport of molecules within a cell, intracellular transport, between organelles (example: transport of RNA from the nucleus to endoplastic recticulum for protein translation) OR it could be any molecule externally secreted (example: hormonal effector into the bloodstream).
