  • is this heater sufficient for my 55 gal tank?

    I bought this heater:

    Marineland Stealth Shatterproof Heater (200W)

    http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display...

it says "up to 55 gallons"

so is this going to keep my 55 gallon tank @ 75 degrees during the winter whens its very cold? or do i need to return this and upgrade to the 250W heater?

    thanks a lot

  • Insect in my aquarium?

I saw him in there a couple days ago, very vague sketch.. between an essay being due and work i didn't have time to post it while still fresh in my memory.

not sure of number of legs, not a ton though. did have tenticle looking things coming from its rear-end. Not sure about off his head.

He was walking around, not swimming.. although they can swim a little bit by like squirming, but not very well.

He was fairly large for a bug, like maybe a 1/2"

    http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y64/DarKApheX/bug...

any ideas/sources that could have my answer? Any help is appreciated! thanks!

  • What kind of bug is this?

saw it walking up my dresser just now, coolest/wierdest looking bug i've ever seen.

    http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y64/DarKApheX/bug...

the white spots are not actually white, actually transparent, i had to look REALLY hard to notice that he was actually partly translucent.

6 legs, 3 left, 3 right. Kind of a brown color, almost camouflaged to my dresser perfectly.

any help (if possible) would be appreciated, very curious.

  • Q about live plant lighting?

what is considered "moderate" lighting for a live freshwater plant?

    25W? 50W?

  • Scuds allowed in aquarium?

I bought live plants that had scuds aka Gammarus that came in the bag.

Is it ok to put these into my tank?

    PS : Freshwater, obviously.

20 gallon tank. Fish are 2 Tetras that are 1" and 1.5", 1 Platy, 1 Red Tail Shark, 1 Betta fish.

Also many small snails (also came with plants), Ramshorn snail, and live plants.

I understand they eat plants, but is it noticeable/threatening to the plant? There are 3 1/4" scuds. There is plenty of fish crap for the scuds to eat up, which would be nice. Help with my gravel cleaning, lol.

    thanks a lot!

  • insect in my aquarium?

posted a similar thread last night with no real answer, here's an updated sketch i just made.

    http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y64/DarKApheX/ins...

I just bought some plants from a pet store i don't usually go to in my aquarium. The water was mighty dirty so i pulled the plants out and examined the water. Right away i noticed these guys shooting around.

They kinda bend inwards when crawling around or just chilling, but then like straighten out and bounce around. They curl up in ball when scared.

They cling onto poop that is in the bag.

Are these things ok to put into my fish tank? Its a freshwater tank with Tetras, platys, a red-tail shark and a Beta fish.

The tank they came in had fish in it and many different plants+snails.

they are fairly large for an aquarium bug. Not huge, probably a 1/4 inch.

    Help is much appreciated! Thanks!

  • apple snail question?

I took a snail from my neighbors pond a couple of hours ago and put it into my aquarium. Apple snail, i think.

I was just looking at it and it like, dropped a bunch of really tiny black balls all clumped together, then like shot out a couple more in singles.

Are those eggs? is it taking a crap? what is it doing?

  • treating my tank for Ick/Fungus?

I'm not sure whether my fish has a serious case of Ick or Body and Fin Fungus/rot.

Should i treat it for both? or will that harm my fish more then help them? They (2 iridescent sharks) are in a 10gal hospital tank atm.

the 2 medicines i have is Mardel Maracyn and Mardel Maracide Concentrate. One is a bacteria medicine for body/fin rot etc, one is a parasite medicine for ick etc.

    Question 2:

I had to set up the tank quick so i used tap water with a chlorine neutralizing product. My pH is 7.8, is that ok? or will this kill my fish while its in the hospital tank?

Thanks a lot for reading and responding! It's appreciated.

  • sick fish, need help.?

I dont want to write too much, but please read or at least skim through, i really need help and i just don't know what else that i can do.

Heres my problem, last week i noticed that one of my fish had Ick, Body and Fin fungus, and Tail Rot. The fish was a mess (female platy). A couple days earlier my male platy died.

I had a problem with high pH and obviously, bad water (i received some bad information about water/filter changes from a pet store i went to, arg!)

I used Mardel Maracyn Concentrate, Mardel Maracide Concentrate, and a 7.0 pH medicine, i forget the exact name of it. I followed the instructions exactly, for 5 days.

Today was the 6th day, 1 day after the 5 day treatment period. And now my 2 Iridescent Sharks are very sick.

Symptoms are: Some white stuff on the body of the fish, looks furry, like fungus. But the REALLY bad parts are the fins.. The fins look awful. They look like they are rotting away, like mold is covering the tips of them.

I just treated my tank for this, how did my 2 fish, neither who showed any symptoms when i started the treatment when my platy looked sick, suddenly become sick?

I haven't done a water change since treating the water, the package didn't say anything about that. I did a water change/gravel clean just before adding medicine on the 3rd day of treatment.

My pH is 7.2, my ammonia is at 0ppm. My other fish look fine. I havent been over feeding.

one of my sharks started showing symptoms yesterday, day 5. But i couldn't tell if he was sick or not. Now he REALLY looks bad, both of them.

Please forward me any help, sources, etc.

Thanks a LOT for reading/skimming. I appreciate it a lot.

  • Sick fish, help quick please!?

Ok, i have a pregnant platy that is having problems, this all must have happened last night.

    symptoms are :

white dots covering her back fin

    torn up back fin

    white spots on her body

what appears to be a white fungus looking thing above her eyes. It is something ontop of the skin, not a white part of the skin.

whats wrong with my fish? my pH level is very high, 7.6 or higher (my test kit only goes to 7.6) but i have been trying to fix that, and just bought a medicine to lower my pH.

I bought a medicine made by Mardel that claims to fix "Fin and Tail rot, Popeye, and 'Body Fungus'"

is this correct? or does my fish have ick?

    Help is VERY appreciated.

  • Dwarf Frog Q: Clawed or not?

Ok, I bought a frog yesterday from what i consider to be a trusted and very nice pet store. I go there for all my aquarium needs. This was my first time buying a frog.

The man took a frog from a tank labeled "Clawed Dwarf Frog," but assured me that it wasn't clawed. (they do tend to forget to update the labels since they have many fish that come and go quickly from their tanks)

I don't have a picture of the frog, however this is its description the best i can give it.

    size : 1.5 inches

pattern : Olive in color with many small patches of a darker green all over him

hands : not webbed (no black tips)

feet : webbed, each foot has 5 toes, 3 have black tips (claws?)

behavior : dug up one of my fake plants and was hiding under it. (behavior of a clawed frog?)

I could really use some help, I've been researching this for at least an hour and a half and haven't come up with a definitive answer to my question. Im hoping asking here will help.

Reliable sources would be great. I read that clawed frogs can kill all of your frogs in one night O.O, and i have a tetra that could easily fit inside of my frogs mouth (i've seen pictures of clawed frogs eating bigger then it!)

  • Question about making a mold for patching rust?

Ok, im restoring an 86 camaro. Tore out the carpet and there is a rediculous amount of rust on the passenger side of the car at the foot rest. Its kinda got some bumps and unevenness.

This is a low budget restoration, no big machines or warehouses. Just metal, some hammers, a metal cutter, and a welder.

Q: What is the easiest (and cheapest) way to make a mold of the floorpan, say abt 1' x 1' area, so i can then replicate it by bending a piece of metal.

I remember in elementary school, we used to do this thing as an arts and craft activity. We'd make this gooey mixture, cut up strips of paper, dump them in, and then put them on something. It would harden in a short matter of time and create a nice mold. We used to make like masks with it.

anyone know what that is called, how to do it, or what materials i need?

Thanks a lot for taking the time to read + reply. Any help would be great!

  • loud whistling/squeeling from my 96 Camry...?

1996 Toyota Camry LE I4... not that it makes a difference i don't think.

When im driving down the road... i keep hearing these loud, extremely annoying whistling-kinda noises...

It sounds, to me atleast, like the noise is coming from the right rear of the car.... my first thought was that either it was a brake pad or something was grinding something like an axle part or something in the wheel/axle department...

I dont think its a brake pad or anything, because first of all... i just got mine replaced less then a year ago... secondly, it squeaked while i was driving.. not braking.

I dont think its something directly related to the spinning of the wheels either, because whether im going... 65 on the highway, or 30 down a street... the squeaking doesnt happen louder, faster, or necessarily more often...

im at a lose, any1 got any ideas? i got the day off tomorrow so toss some ideas at me and what i should do.

  • window motor or window regulator...?!?

ok, i own a '96 camry and i am having problems with my driver + passanger side windows...

they roll down fine, however... getting my drivers side window up can take up to 20-30 minutes...

it goes like 1-2" inches up then dies... i wait a few minutes... try again... and so on...

my passanger side window is starting to show similar signs, it goes down normally... but it goes about half the speed going up as it does going down... and half the speed of my rear two windows going up...

    whats wrong?

    window alignment?

    window regulator?

    window motor?

    Thanks in advance!

PS: when i replaced my factory speakers with my new aftermarket speakers awhile ago, i noticed sum mold and water damage on the back of the door and the original speaker... mean anything? it wasn't a lot and it was more towards the bottom of the door panel....

  • painting a car: siphon-feed or gravity-feed..?

Ok, first off.. what are the differences between "siphon-feed" spray guns, "gravity-feed" spray guns and coventional spray guns?

Im looking to repaint an entire car, so i dont want a detailing spray gun or a spray gun w/ a small spraying diameter...

i bought a gravity-feed spray gun awhile ago and didnt really think much about it... until i looked at the back of a 2pint duplicolor paint can today and saw that it said, "for best results, use a siphon-feed spray gun"

then i looked at some primers, and they said to use a conventional spray gun...

does it depend upon the brand of paint? or the type of paint? or.. what?..

please help, and thank you for taking the time to read/reply.

ps: any painting tips would be great..
