  • Quotation help?

Who said, "Better the misery I know than the misery I don't know"? I've tried Googling it and a couple quotation databases and no luck. Thanks!

  • Do I have a case against my employer under the Americans w/ Disabilities Act?

I have bipolar disorder that's been well managed with medication for over 15 years. The only problem I still have is occasional insomnia when I'm stressed out.

Last July I started a new job. The first few months were very stressful as I was learning a lot and I stressed out every time I made a mistake. I missed a few days because of insomnia, so I asked for an accommodation. I asked for a core schedule of 10:30-5 with the option to come in earlier if I wanted.

The last several months I've had almost perfect attendance, although it's hard for me to come in before 10:30 since I don't have to. I asked my boss if I could go back to my old schedule, and she said she was too busy with the year end close to deal with it right now.

So I asked if I could work 8:30-5 without officially changing my schedule, since my accommodation allows me to come in earlier, and she said no. My schedule is 10:30-5 and that's final.

I never would have asked for the accommodation if it said I couldn't work more than 32.5 hours per week. I need the extra money. Can I file a complaint against them since they obviously changed my accommodation without my permission? Thank you!

  • Should I let my cat love-bite me?

I recently adopted a cat, and sometimes when I'm petting him around the head, he'll bite me very gently. He barely bites down, and it doesn't even hurt, but I've been saying "No!" because I was afraid he'd start biting harder. Also I don't want him doing it to a guest of mine.

But today I read an article that said love bites from cats are in fact a sign of affection. Now I kind of feel bad about trying to discourage him from showing affection. Should I let him love-bite me?

  • Why does my cat smell weird?

On Friday I adopted an adult cat from a shelter. Her fur has a weird, musky odor that's very different from how my other cat smells. She was spayed at the shelter, less than two weeks ago. I know that the sex hormones don't disappear immediately after a spay, so I'm wondering if that might be why she smells weird. I wiped her down with a pet cleansing cloth, but that didn't help.

  • Should I just let my cats fight it out?

On Monday I adopted a new cat, Caesar. When his foster mom let him out of his carrier, he sniffed noses with the resident cat, Daphne, and everything seemed fine. A few minutes later they got in a fight, and now Daphne is afraid of him.

I've kept them separated for the last several days, with one in the bedroom and baby gates on the door during the day. Daphne has very slowly started getting closer to Caesar. This morning she ate within a few feet of him, but when she was finished she backed away.

I really want to end the separation this weekend, because Daphne has been sleeping with me and she's very irritating, walking across my pillow and nuzzling me while I'm sleeping. I'm wondering if I should just let them loose together so they can "fight it out" and move on. Before their first fight, Caesar wasn't acting aggressive; he just got too close to Daphne and ignored her hissing and growling. So I think he just wants to sniff her or play, and they didn't get injured in the fight. Caesar is declawed and Daphne isn't, so I think she should be able to put him in his place if I just let them resolve it without interfering. Any advice?

  • Would I be fired simply because I changed the TV channel in the break room?

This week I started an awesome new job at a small company (28 people) that designs and manufactures shooting ranges, shoot houses, and shooting range supplies. There's a good chance that many of my co-workers, especially the owners, are conservative.

The TV in the break room is often set to Fox News Channel, and sometimes I'll change it to something non-political like Price is Right or sports. My sister seems to think that simply changing the channel will make them think I'm a liberal, and I might get fired. My opinion is that they won't infer that I'm a liberal just because I change the channel. I'm not changing it to MSNBC, after all, and I never talk politics at work. Plenty of Republicans enjoy Price is Right and sports. And even if they do think I'm a liberal, are they going to invest all that time and money in hiring me and training me only to fire me for something stupid like that?

I know that legally, a private company can fire someone for their political beliefs. I'm wondering how likely it is that they would. If it was that important to them, I would think they would have asked me about it in my interview. They asked if I was anti-gun (I'm not), but not if I was a liberal.

  • Can I put a fish aquarium here?

I want to start up a fish aquarium, and the only place I can put it is in my living room, about 15 feet away from a wall A/C so there's a slight draft when the A/C is on. My fish care sheet says to keep the tank away from drafts, but I'm thinking as long as the water is warm enough, it shouldn't matter what the air temp is. Plus the tank will have a hood, so that should protect it. Thanks!

  • Is there a calculator to figure out how much take home pay I'll have after taxes are withheld?

I'm job hunting right now, and I'm trying to figure out the lowest pay rate that I can accept. Is there a calculator where I can punch in my filing status, exemptions, and gross pay to get an estimate of what my take home pay will be after the taxes are taken out? Thanks!

  • How can I convince a landlord to let me have 2 cats?

I may be moving to a very small town (8,000 people) for a great job, but there are very few cat-friendly apartments or rental houses. I know that I can offer a pet deposit, pet rent, and reference letters from my previous landlords, but is there anything else I can do short of bribery? Thanks!

  • Can I use homemade squirrel repellent to keep my rats from chewing on the couch?

I'm going to be adopting two rats soon, and for their "free time" I can't rat-proof my bedroom due to all the wood furniture. So I'm going to let them run around on my couch, but I'm worried about them chewing it up.

I've heard that the Bitter Apple spray might actually encourage chewing, so I'm wondering if I could use my homemade squirrel repellent (hot sauce & water), or would that be too harsh for them? And, would that just keep them from chewing, or would the smell also irritate them? My couch is dark brown, so it shouldn't show any stains. Thanks!

  • How do I move things to my SD card on an Android phone?

When I click on an app, there's a button that says "Move to SD Card", but it's grayed out so I can't press it. I bought a cheap smart phone, which is nicer than my old phone, but it only has 1.5 GB of internal storage. Thanks!

  • Who could build a customized rat cage for me?

I want my rats to have a larger cage, but all of the rat cages online are really small. A large rabbit cage would be perfect if the bars weren't spaced so wide. I used to have a multi-level rat cage, but it was really hard to clean since their waste would get crusted in the mesh of the upper levels. They also peed through the bars onto the wall. So I'm wondering if somebody could build a nice big single-level cage with narrow bar spacing and a deep base so they can't kick out the bedding. I just don't know how to go about finding this person. Should I just put an ad on Craigslist? Thanks!

  • Is this esophageal cancer?

My cat is 18 years old, and he has almost all of the symptoms of esophageal cancer: less energy, gulping/snorting while eating and grooming, and regurgitating. The only symptom he doesn't have is weight loss. Does he need to have all the symptoms in order for it to be esophageal cancer? Is there another disease that has these symptoms?

He eats only canned food, so that might be why he hasn't lost weight since it probably wouldn't irritate his throat as much as dry food. I already have a vet appointment scheduled for Thursday; I'm just looking for a sliver of hope because I love him so much.

  • What is this called?

What is it called when a company purposely designs its products to fail in a few years so that consumers have to keep buying new ones? I think there's an economics term for it.

  • Should a recent college grad apply for a job that requires 1-3 years of experience?

I'm going to be graduating in May with an associate's degree in accounting. I've started browsing the job sites, but I rarely find "entry-level" jobs. Most require at least 1-3 years of experience. Is it a waste of my time to apply for these jobs?

  • Were my shocks and struts improperly installed?

Last week I bought new shocks and struts. I thought the ride would be a lot smoother since my car was 64,000 miles overdue, but if anything the ride is even bumpier. I can be on a road that looks perfectly smooth, and it's still bumpy. Is it possible that they were improperly installed, or that they took out the old ones without putting in the new ones? I'm going to call tomorrow, but if I can't get in right away is it safe to drive it?

  • Is this banging noise the radiator pipes?

I moved into this apartment last March, and for the last couple months I'll hear a banging noise in my bedroom ceiling several times per day, for a few minutes at a time. I talked to my upstairs neighbor, and he said he's not doing anything. Since the noise started around the time that he turned on his heat, I'm wondering if the radiator pipes are knocking. But wouldn't they bang all the time instead of just the first few minutes of the heater being on? It's so loud that it wakes me up even though I sleep with ear plugs.

  • Would a young adult cat be too energetic for my senior cat?

I have a 12 year old cat, and I want to get her a cat friend. I've been browsing on Petfinder, and I found some cats that seem nice. But they're all 1-2 years old, and I'm afraid they'll have too much energy for my older cat. She's pretty active and still likes to play. I'm just worried because when I was a kid my parents bought a kitten, and our 16 year old cat HATED him because he always wanted to wrestle.
