I am getting confused in this subject

if i was asked to find the surface integral of F.dS

how do i convert dS in term of dA?

and how do i convert them to polar coordinates?

and if i was asked to find the surface integral of F.n.dS

what is the process to solve them ?

i looked at websites but they werent helpful at all, and my text book is more useless than ever

Let S be the surface defined in the following way

S:= z^2+y^2+x^2=1

and

F(x,y,z)= 3*(x^2)*z-2*x*(y^2)

+2*x*z^2-2*(z^3)+(z^2)

find the surface integral of(f*dS)

and

find the surface integral of( (gradient (f))*dS)

i got for the first one

(5/6)*pi

and the second one

(-8/3)*pi

was i right?

2 AnswersMathematics9 years ago### surface integrals mathematics?

Hello guys

I have a question regarding surface integral

Let S be the surface defined in the following way

S:= z^2+y^2+x^2=1

and

F(x,y,z)= 3*(x^2)*z-2*x*(y^2)+2*x*z^2-2*(z^3)+(z^2)

Compute analytically the surface integral of

j=integral (f .dS)

the way I attempted solving this question is first find the value of dS in terms of dA

Z=sqrt(1- y^2-x^2)

dS=sqrt( (x^2)/ (1- y^2-x^2)+ (y^2)/ (1- y^2-x^2) + 1 )dA

I replaced ever Z of f(x,y,z) with sqrt(1- y^2-x^2)

My integral becomes integral( F(x,y,z)* sqrt( (x^2)/ (1- y^2-x^2)+ (y^2)/ (1- y^2-x^2) + 1 ))dA

I changed the integral into polarization form but it keeps growing bigger and bigger.

What’s the correct method to solve the question

Thanks

A tie‐rod in a BMW M3 needs to support a force of 10.0 kN without yielding. BMW Engineers are considering three different materials for this application; an advanced steel with a yield stress of 600 MPa and density of 7.80 g/cm3, an aluminum alloy with a yield stress of 190 MPa and density of 2.70 g/cm3 and a Mg alloy with a yield stress of 125 MPa and density of 1.74 g/cm3. Which of these materials will result in the lightest tie‐rod that can sustain the above force?

Hint: The length of the rod is the same for all materials, but the diameter may be different.

in this question the density is messing me up.

how do i get the stress from the density and the force?

let A= 1 2 4 -1

4 0 -1 2

3 3 7 0

3 5 6 -4

given that det A=-4, use the adjoint to find the entry in row 1 column 2 of (inverse A)

(a) -9/4

(b) 9

(c) 9/4

(d)-65/2

(e)-9

i am getting (a) but the proff souloution says its (c)

where is my mistake

my solution:

if it is in row 1 column 2 then i need to find the determinant in row 2 column 1 of A

| 2 4 -1 |

| 3 7 0 |

| 5 6 -4 | = 30-21 = 9

answer = 9/(-4)

i cant find my mistake
