  • Distributive law in boolean algebra?

    I know I can simplify:

    (~p and q and ~r) or (~p and q and r)

    = (~p and q)

    But can I simplify:

    (p and ~q and ~r) or (p and q and r)

    = p

If you could explain to me why or why not it would be muchly appreciated!

  • Someone on my Facebook seems like she wants to commit suicide...?

I have someone I went to high school with on my Facebook account. We were never really "friends" in high school nor did we really talk, she's pretty much on there because we grew up in a small town so there was only 140 people in my graduation year and we all grew up together in the same schools.

For the past few months she's seemed really depressed. She always posts statuses about how she hates people and misses her grandma (who passed away recently) and how she wants to go out and kill people and weird stuff like that. No one comments on it.

The other day she posted a status that has me really worried. She said "I don't know how much longer I can live" and I just don't know what to do. She seems really angry and on the verge of suicide but it almost seems that if I said, you know, "Hey is everything okay, you want to talk about it?" she'd just tell me to f off or something.

I don't really know any of her family but I just don't understand how they don't see this! I have no idea what to do, I don't just want to stand by and wait for her to actually try to commit suicide but I don't feel like talking to her would help much :(

    What would you guys do/suggest?

  • Why is swearing "bad"?

I've never quite understood why people censor out certain words on tv, radio, etc. I understand there is a social stigma around certain words, but why is it that people think it's such a big deal to make a certain sound (literally what a word is).

What's your views on swearing and why? If you don't like swearing is it just because you were raised to think it was bad? Or are there other reasons...

  • Has anyone ever slept like this?

So in reading about sleep and dreams, it seems that it's in the last cycle of sleep (REM) that lucid dreaming occurs, and that in this cycle our body is paralyzed. So it kind of got me wondering about sleep disorders...

I've seen people sleep walk before and it's like they're in a dream but they don't notice you at all.

Then I read about a disorder where people actually hurt themselves or the people they sleep beside because they'll act out their dreams, but again they can't interact with the "real" world in their sleep.

So this brings me to the point of this question, my boyfriend is a very strange sleeper. In the 2 years we have been dating I've noticed it more and more but he not only acts out his dreams, but will talk to me while he's doing it.

I can't stay asleep for longer than an hour at a time (I know that's not normal) so I notice him doing this quite a lot. It usually will be in the middle of the night, he will get on his knees on the bed and get this look on his face that I can only describe as someone seeing a new planet for the first time, just utter shock and amazement. Then he will start acting out his dream.

For example, the other night he was trying to kill some giant spiders or monsters or something on the ceiling. He knew exactly where everything in the room was (the bed, the ceiling, the windows, etc) and didn't have any trouble navigating it and I asked him "What are you trying to do?" and he told me. Then finally I told him "You need to lay down again there's nothing on the ceiling" and he got mad at me saying he needed to kill the things on the ceiling and I told him no its a dream, so he finally agreed and laid down and went back to sleep.

I can't really find any disorders where the person both interacts with the people around them, their environment, and their dream all at the same time. Does anyone else get this or know what it is?

  • How to get MS Visual C++?

I am trying to practice using the C programming language. The online "book" I am using recommends Microsoft Visual C++ to practice in but after several attempts at downloading the program I am having no luck. They download but either won't run, run in french only, or install a bunch of junk and not the actual program.

I uninstalled all of them from my computer and now I am wondering if anyone knows where to get the actual program!! I just want to start practicing :(

  • Sims 3 University -- can't gain credits?

I just installed The Sims 3 University expansion yesterday and I don't think it is working properly.

When I first sent my sim to university they could gain credits, but once their final grade came in and they were done the semester, they wouldn't return home. I found I could use the "Drop Out of University" option and they would still keep the credits but would return home.

Now I am trying to finish my degree, I signed up for 2 weeks and despite my sim writing exams it just continues on as if they have another week to go, with the same classes etc.

I don't have any mods installed.

Is anyone else having this problem?

  • Just out of curiosity, why do people feed with formula?

I don't have any kids, nor do I plan on having any kids for many years, but I have always kind of wondered but I am not around enough women with young children to know:

Why do women choose to feed their children formula versus the healthier and cheaper option of breastfeeding? Now I understand that some women have troubles and can't produce milk, but I mean this is how humans have been feeding their babies since the beginning of their existance, so that can't account for all of the cases...

It seems to be getting more popular, I'm just curious as to why?

If you don't want to breastfeed when you're half asleep, or out and about being busy, couldn't you invest in a good breast pump and make bottles?

I honestly don't know, just curious.

  • What's your view/opinions on illegal drugs?

I am just curious, looking for some different opinions. Here's my opinions:

-I think that certain drugs should be legal such as Marijuana, oil, LSD, and MDMA.

-I feel this way because it is virtually impossible to overdose on the first 3, and very pure MDMA (not ecstacy) is hard to overdose on, unless you are very reckless.

-The studies I have read show that LSD and MDMA are very non-addive (physically) and place it in the same catagory as caffeine. Although, some dispute they are psychologically addive, I beg to differ and think almost any feeling in life can be psychologically addictive.

-If these drugs were legalized, they would be more controlled, there wouldn't be drug wars or violence involved with their sales as they would be legal (well not counting the kind that exists in legal trade), their purity and quality could be better monitored benefitting the users and the health system (in the case of MDMA, because people wouldn't be poisoned by idiots making the stuff or cutting it with other dangerous chemicals), tax benefits, less non-violent offenders in jail or using valuable legal resources.

-It can be argued that alcohol is a LOT worse than many drugs, yet it is legal. Look at all the violence and death that occured during prohibition, much like what is going on today with drugs like these. It could be handled much more efficiently and effectively if they were legal.

This is just some of what I think...I am Canadian so depending on where your from the laws may be different.

What are your opinions and why?

  • Is this normal? Preferably answers from 20+?

I am looking for maybe some advice or opinions from people who have been where I am now or have gone through this...basically I'm 19 years old and I am just about done my second year of university in a bachelor of science program. My intentions going into the program were to get into medical school and hopefully work as a surgeon one day because it has always been something that really interested me. I never really cared about school until high school when I started working my butt off to get a 95% average throughout. I regarded myself as someone with fairly good self-control because even though I had the stereotypical party/stoner/druggie friend group and boyfriends, I would only go out drinking maybe once a month and barely smoked weed a few times a year.

What I am kind of concerned about is I feel like I am a completely different person after the past two years since I graduated. I moved out when I was 17 into an apartment 140kms from where my friends and family live for university. I had a boyfriend who came to live with me soon after. Basically the relationship was very abusive and finally ended on my 19th birthday when he tried to kill me and I finally cut off all communication with him. Since then (5months) I have become a completely different person than I was in high school. I party every weekend now, I smoke weed a lot more, and now I started doing m. All of which I feel is fine in moderation, but the fact that I want to do it every weekend is a little upsetting. My grades in university aren't as great as I'd like them to be, and every day I contemplate quitting school to get a job and open a business. I just feel like I am a completely different person, I used to be the person who didnt act like anyone else, and now that's all I try to do... I keep telling myself this is just a phase, maybe I need to take some time off school to find myself...but I'm not sure if I'm making a huge mistake? Has anyone else been in this type of situation/advice?

  • Very First "Friends" Episode?

I was watching old Friends re-runs on tv the other day, and watched a reallllyyyy old episode that I can't seem to find anywhere. I looked up episode 1.01 and it's where Ross already knows his wife is a lesbian and Joey is already introduced to the show...but the one I saw on tv was before this??

The one I saw on tv showed Chandler looking for a roomate and asking one guy to move in with him, but it didn't work out and he had to move in with Joey instead, but none of them knew him yet, and they were watching BayWatch? As well, Ross goes into the Central Perk but at the time it was a bar, and him a Phoebe discuss how it is getting turned into a Cafe and how he just found out his wife is a lesbian??

Is this a later episode or something? I am so confused.

  • Having a family and going through school?

I am heading off to University in September for my bachelor or Science and my plan is to get in to Med School, but lately I have been thinking about having a family and you know, a social life? lol

I love biology and medicine, I am even taking courses aside from my normal school in it just for fun, but I am wondering if anyone knows what its like trying to balance school/family/social life. I don't want to wait until I am in my mid-30's to have kids, but my schooling will take 11-13 years to become a cardiac surgeon. And now I am confused if this is what I should do or am I making a big mistake? Will I be able to have a family that I will actually get to spend time with in my 20's? I am open to other suggestions within the medical/biology/science fields but I need to do something different every day or I get bored easily, so I couldn't like sit in an office/lab every day. Any ideas/comments? Sorry if this was a little jumpy

  • I want to change my hair color?

I am bored with my hair color and style, and have been looking into how I should change it, any suggestions?

Current hair color: Very Dark Brown (pretty much black) with Light Blonde Streaks on top

    Natural hair color: Dark Brown

Length: Just under my bust line (I don't want it any shorter, I am actually trying to grow it longer)

Skin tone: Pale, made even worse by the fact that I tan but refuse to tan my face, so I compensate with bronzer (makeup). I do have a few freckles, but you can't really see them most of the time because I wear makeup.

I have tried going blonde because I love platinum blonde hair, but everytime I have tried it looks horrible. Any ideas or pictures that have a good mix of light and dark, or just something you think would look nice?

  • How to make some more money?

I am 16 years old, almost 17, and I am currently doing a full time internship at a retirement facility until the middle of August. I will get $2000 from this. My problem is though that my truck has recently broken down and I need to make about $7000 to buy a new vehicle. I am just not sure how exactly I am going to make another $5000 in the next two months. I need some serious ideas on how to do this, I have already considered a second job and am looking into it but I need some other more creative, good money making ideas. Thanks, serious answers only please...

  • Why not universal health care for the United States?

So although I haven't really looked into this too much because I am Canadian and it doesn't really concern me on a regular basis, why are some Americans so opposed to universal health care? I was watching the doctors t.v. show today and they were discussing this and one of them said "well countries like Canada and France don't have as good of medical care as we have here". And I am thinking about this, and in what way? From what I've heard getting medical insurance in the States isn't that easy to begin with, then you have to pay unreasonable fees, and when you finally have to use it, they try anything to get out of it or won't cover you fully? This is just what I've heard from various sources but I also hear the horror stories of people having to choose between saving one of their fingers or the other because they couldn't afford it, or not being able to pay their mortgage because of their medical bills. If anyone is willing to be swayed, I have one thing to say about universal health care, specifically here in Canada. There are no cons to it! Your not some socialist bastards if you have it, the quality of your medical care is not compromised in any way, and you don't have to ask your insurance company or fill out forms or anything to go to the emergency room, etc. If I want to go get lets say an MRI tomorrow, I would not have anything to pay; if I needed to go to the medical clinic or to a doctors or to the hospital, there is no charge! I take meds that would otherwise cost me about $200/month, and I pay...NOTHING! My mom had breast cancer, she now takes pills every day, and one pill costs $100...she pays nothing. Her kimo treatments, raidation treatments, and 3 breast surgeries including reconstructive ones were completely paid for, not one cent from our pockets. I am just wondering what eveyone's opinions are on this?

  • I just rescued a DEGU and need some advice?

So I just rescued a Degu this morning from people that were mistreating it (at that point it was living in a taped up cardboard box). I have done my best today to gather up a nice home for it to live in (I'm keeping it), I have a 3 story cage with sand, food, water, a wheel, and I built it a wooden house. The problem is it still looks almost depressed I would say, and I hear that that happens easily when they're not in pairs. I have already read about introducing Degus, but I don't know the sex of my Degu (and dont want to take the chance of introducing a new one and ending up with a bunch of babies). I don't think it is comfortable enough around me for me to try to check its sex, and I've heard that sometimes they don't get along well and you have to keep them in seperate cages (something I cannot do). Anyone have any ideas please?
