  • Are there Families of species that have gone extinct?

So, hopefully I'll be posting this in the right section-I was idly looking through extinct species on wikipedia today and considered a thought- throughout prehistory, there are examples of extinct species that fit into what we consider as groups of animals today- marsupials, cetaceans, cervinae. What I'm not sure of is- have there been instances in the paleontological record of entire groups of species going extinct?Have there been extinction events that wiped entire families, or orders (or higher divisions) of life off the face of the earth? If there are, what examples are there of unusual or divergent patterns of life that ceased to exist that have no easily distinguishable modern counterpart?

  • Handling a person with severe anxiety/depression when others need support?

    Hi Yahoo folks,

I'm in a bit of a delicate scenario here. I'm friends online with someone who suffers from extreme anxiety and depression, with frequent instances of self harm.

The problem I am facing is that while I want to support her as much as possible, the incidents where she has had extreme breakdowns, and depends on the rest of the online social group I'm part of, is becoming so frequent such that nobody else gets a chance to have a bad day and get our support.

Folks who are recently bereaved are in a situation where they are obliged to provide emotional support to someone else who is having a breakdown for a rather small reason.

The person in question also tends to get triggered with low mood when someone else mentions hardships they're undergoing, again making it very difficult to talk out your troubles when she's around.

I want to be receptive to this person's difficulties, but I also don't think it's fair how little emotional support everyone else is able to get because of them.

They have been receiving medical help for a long time but it doesn't seem to be helping much, and none of us in our group have any medical experience with helping with mental illness.

How do I resolve this situation in a way that is fair to all people involved?

  • Extraterrestrial colonization- movie, game, etc. suggestions?

Hey there, I recently saw the movie Interstellar, and I'm a big fan of the concept of extraterrestrial colonization, although I felt not nearly enough time was spent exploring the -colonization- parts in that movie. Can anyone suggest any more films/games/books etc. that explore this concept?

  • Reactions to 'his dark materials' by Philip Pullman?

So, I'm curious about multiple reactions on this- to those who have read Philip Pullman's trilogy 'his dark materials' (or, potentially, stopped reading partway through) comprised of Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass and/or seen the ill-fated movie adaptation "The Golden Compass", what is your take on the religious connotations that the books/movie deliver?

The plot tends to take a rather scathing view on organized religion- a lot of critics call it an atheist rant, but it seems more like an anti-theism rant to me (that is, to reject god regardless of their existence or not).

That said, the books are wonderfully written and the plot and characters are interesting, with a nice blend of quantum mechanics and bizarre fantasy.

  • Changes of procreation in evolution?

So there's something that's been niggling at me today. I'm sure anyone looking at this question will know a lot more than me about the process of evolution.

I find it very easy to consider particular physical traits emerging and persisting in descendants as of a result of natural selection- what I am puzzled by and curious to is how this same process gave rise to radically different methods of procreation across species. E.g. a mammal gestating inside the mother compared to the duplication of single celled organisms.

It's much harder, at least for me, to visualize a path through which methods of breeding change than physical characteristics of a species.

How does one account for this change using the principles known today? And at what period in the history of life on the planet would these changes have started to emerge?

  • Is there an astronomical term for this?

So I've been playing a little bit of Kerbal Space Program (sort of a NASA spacecraft building/piloting simulator), and I decided to build a multiple use craft designed specifically for landing on the moons of other planets, but for the life of me I couldn't think what to call it.

Basically, my question is- is there a word like extraterrestrial or extrasolar, etc. that would mean 'an object in the solar system, but outside the Earth's sphere of influence'.

For example, you could define Deimos or Io as being objects that be described by the word, but the Moon and other objects orbiting the Earth, could not be described with this word.

  • Different religion? Or different sect?

I was wondering how one determines how much difference between beliefs warrants calling a set of beliefs and traditions a completely different religion as opposed to a different sect of the same religion. For example, Being catholic and being protestant are both considered christianity, but with significant difference between them to cause an incredible amount of bloodshed throughout history.

Is a religion defined exclusively by the prophet that started the religion? And that a different prophet warrants a different religion.

  • Sleeping dogs- can't counter Grapplers?

So every time I get in a fight with the fat grappler bastards I can never seem to counter their crappy normal attacks. i can break the grapples fine, but every time I try and counter one of their normal attacks where they flash red, it just doesn't register it at all, and I subsequently get my *** handed to me by every other enemy after being stunned by it. Has anyone else noticed this?

  • Imagery in Islam- depiction of Muhammed?

Well, I imagine this is going to be a touchy subject but I want to bring it up.

So, there's always been a big to-do about images of Muhammad, the Islamic Prophet. It is more than likely that I'm underinformed, but I'd like to lay out the reason why this is (or at least the reason I think why, someone may come to correct me on this) and make a couple of queries.

One of the standards of the Islamic faith is that no images must ever be created depicting God, for a variety of reasons, the foremost being that the belief is that God being omnipotent, omnipresent, etc. etc. is beyond the crudeness of set imagery, even if created by the most talented artist. And also that it is arrogant of mortals to consider that they could know God's form if he had one.

Now, supposedly the reason why no images can be made of Muhammed is that he must not be elevated as a diety of false worship (Muhammed himself during his lifetime saw the eradication of graven images of 'false dieties' removen from the Kaaba, stemming the idea that he himself should not be cast in image lest people worship him falsely).

    But my queries are this:

    1. Has this idea of the strict law of forbidding images of Muhammed not grossly backfired in it's original intent? Muhammed has now become suddenly incredibly important, and idolised and fiercely protected as this entity who is too good to be depicted, which in the terms of the actual religion, is a terrible terrible mistake. That right alone within the religion of Islam is reserved for God himself.

    2. If no images have been kept of Muhammed as per the rule he laid out for himself, then surely without some other means of seeing him, there is pretty much zero chance of him being corectly depicted. Is it the intent itself that is offensive? If I had drawn a blob on paper and marked it as 'Muhammed', would that still offend?

  • My parcel is stuck in the post, completely stuck? -UK?

So here's the deal, I recently joined up with TalkTalk on a internet detail (details aren't really important), but as part of the deal they throw in a modem. The internet connection was set up, no problem, but the modem got lost in the mail. I managed to call TalkTalk, and found the tracking number. I found out the package was sent to a sorting facility due to a failed delivery (no card was left anywhere either).

So, I tried to arrange a redelivery to a nearby post office- it didn't go through, just ended up staying in the sorting facility.

So next step, I contacted the post office directly by phone, at which point I was told that the property that the parcel was to be delivered to had not been registered with the Street naming and numbering department of the City Council. And if I wanted the parcel delivered I'd have to contact the developers of the property to have the property registered.

I attempted to contact them, and have received no response.

So, I have attempted to contact the Naming and Numbering department of the City Council directly twice so far, no response.

It's enough to make anyone want to start chewing on walls in frustration. So by this point it seems that I've hit a brick wall made of total incompetence of both the individuals and the organisations involved.

Can anyone suggest some next steps in attempting to retrieve my parcel?

  • How would you react to this scenario?

So this is the picture. You're walking along the street with no particular place to be or appointment to keep- a misguided person runs behind you and snatches something from you- your bag, your purse, your wallet, whatever. In shock, you pause before trying to give chase or call for help- in this time the theif stops, turns back and returns your item to you, apologizing profusely and calling themselves out on their poor decision.

What is your reaction at this point?

  • Is this Prejudiced or no?

This is a bit of a tricky one for me, but I'm curious, is it considered racist to not be attracted to women/men of a certain race, not because of stereotyped characteristics, but appearance or temperament characteristics inherant in different ethinicities?

  • Skyrim- Problem during Staff of Magnus mission?

I'm having a problem during this mission- the step I'm on is to return to tolfdir after retrieving the staff of magnus. The problem is that a dragon spawned over the college and is making Tolfdir aggressive, meaning I can't talk to him.

This goddamned dragon won't go away if I fast travel or wait, and is just circling the college like an asshole so I can't hit him with anything.

    Any advice?

  • Updating a Ps3 using another Ps3?

We have a little problem in a video games society at my uni. Basically we want to set up some LAN games by having 2 PS3's networked via a router- you know, play red dead redemption or whatever. However, one person outlined that there would be a problem with that in that the updates would not be in sync so they couldn't play with each other. And society policy forbids the ps3 being taken to anyone's house or whatever to be connected to the internet.

However, I was wondering if there was any possible way for a PS3 to install updates directly from another PS3, thus synching the two systems and allowing LAN-play?

  • Why hasn't the Sims been given a multiplayer feature yet?

It's just it seems like the perfect franchise to engineer an online multiplayer aspect into. I'd imagine it would sell a whole lot better too. It seems more pertinent to interact with other players than AI. What is holding it back?
