How does the Royal Family get privacy at Windsor Castle? I always see photos of civilians looning around all over the property.?
You don't see this at Sandringham or Balmoral..and certainly not at Buck House with its protective fencing.10 AnswersRoyalty3 years ago

The Order of Canada is the second-to-highest civilian award for Canadians. It is awarded by The Queen at the recommendation of the Governor General. ( The highest possible civilian award is The Award of Merit - available in any of the monarch's 15 realms. So far no Canadian has won the Award of Merit. It seems English noble persons have a monopoly! )
_Only one_ former prime minister has _not_ received the Order of Canada : John Diefenbaker whose Conservative fell massively in a a 1950s election. "Dief'" as he was called, went down a very unpopular man.
NOW….as this award is given at the Queen's discretion…
…AND knowing how well-briefed HM is about the goings on - both public and behind closed doors -of her governments around the world…
…AND it being obvious that Stephen Harper was thoroughly hated by most Canadians and that is why his government took such a spectacular belly flop in the October election…
…WILL Her Majesty deny the Order of Canada to Harper? Just as a quiet snub to the hated man?
My Guess? Yes, I think HM would not want to besmirch the honour by awarding it to a man so obviously hated by Canadians. I believe her personal judgement is more cagey than that.

I feel tremendously stupid asking this question as I ve been a professional writer most of my working years
( journalism, news, screen writing ); but believe it or not (I can t ) I ve never employed this particular phrase! My writer colleagues can t seem to come to unanimous agreement on its meaning, and it s not in any dictionary in my home or office.
Here are the meanings I ve had from other writers 1.) One wins all; loser loses all; 2.) Nobody wins 3.) One wins everything, losers take away what they had but nothing more.3 AnswersWords & Wordplay5 years ago
Does the Milky Way galaxy spin clockwise or counter-clockwise? Or is this a moronic question? ( I m no scientist)?
If the Universe is ever-expanding, won t all galaxies eventually be ripped apart? Is all planetary life doomed to a violent end?3 AnswersAstronomy & Space5 years ago

I'm thinking here of ex-First Ladies …like Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Nancy Reagan.
These widows most likely have inherited their deceased husband's private estate (usually a rich estate anyway). And I'm sure that a widowed ex-First Lady would receive a routine pension from public monies for their husband's public service. But on top of that public pension do they also get a "widow's pension" top up? I'm curious to know because here in Canada all widows (not just prime ministers' widdows) collect a supplementary cash benefit called "Widow's Pension."4 AnswersPolitics5 years ago

- no, just reducing the volume isn't good enough - when my machine starts up. I've been all over the web, trying things like "Adjust Volume Pref Pane," "psssst," sudo commands in Terminal……and several other apps which names I can't recall right now that promise to kill the sound….but they LIE! Neither does the simplest suggestion I've seen so far work: "Just hold down the "Mute key (F10) when you shut down…the machine will remember that command when it starts up." WROONG!
I'm running Mavericks on a mid-2011 iMac.
God, I want that sound killed!2 AnswersSoftware5 years ago
I am not a misogynist [Honest]…BUT why do females drive shopping carts as if they are the only shopper in the entire store? My blood boils.?
….She'll park her cart sideways across an aisle and wander away, blocking all traffic…She'll park her buggy length-wise tight against the shelves while she ruminates a purchase…no products behind her cart can be reached by other shoppers…She'll cruise aimlessly at funeral speed, drifting to port or starboard unpredictably, or make a sudden stop, other shoppers behind her fume!…Just TRY to get around her! Then at the cashiers row she'll do a little dance, "trying out" this line, then that line, then another line. She's like Goldy Locks sampling the porridge bowls! It's as if females shopping lose all awareness of other persons around them.
On occasion I've politely asked a woman to move it. Mouth-off is what I get back for my trouble.
I've often wondered if maybe there is some kind of spatial mis-cognizance in the female genetic makeup?
Now before I'll enter a supermarket or other large store with carts I check for a preponderance of female shoppers. If so, I won't shop there.7 AnswersEtiquette6 years ago
I'm a great fan of biographies. I like to get inside other people's heads to understand how Life is/was for them.
I keep running into stories of women - mostly rich and famous - who walk right into marriages with men who they KNOW will cheat on them.
The most prominent of these babes I can think of right now follow:
Diana Princess of Wales. She said she knew about Chuck's ongoing affair with The Rotweiller weeks before the wedding. She did it anyway, and look where it took her!
Then there was Jacqueline Kennedy Onnasis. She KNEW Jack Kennedy was a skirt-chasing sex addict, and she went ahead with that, her first, wedding anyway! She knew about Marilyn Monroe's sex romps with the president. She KNEW about Monroe's delusional phone calls to the White House, chasing Kennedy around!
Jackie then married the dirty old dog Aristotle Onnasis, knowing full well that he would continue his sex life with Maria Callas. By this point she didn't
really need the money - she inherited bags of Kennedy money. Jackie never gave Ari sex, she found him physically repulsive! Then why'd she DO it?
Hillary Clinton knew she was marrying a sneaky playboy. WHY WHY?
Liz Taylor knew that Richard Burton would never stop fooling around with other women.
Tammy Wynette knew damn straight that George Jones was an inveterate womanizer. Why'd she do it? SHE had the big money, she didn't need his!
These women really didn't need their cheating husbands' money or fame. I don't get it!2 AnswersMarriage & Divorce6 years ago
Is it a signal of injury? Why, if I happen to over-stretch a muscle while running, say, do I not feel that injury until later? Why don't I feel it immediately? Likewise, I've noticed that I can step on sharp glass while walking barefoot and actually cut my foot, but I don't feel the pain until I SEE it!?
And also, is pain BOTH local and cerebral? If I break my finger, I do seem to feel the pain both in my hand, AND in my brain. How does that work?
This leads me to wonder, also, whether pain is a strictly neurological event? Might it also be a multidimensional sensation that requires psychological notice of injury, and maybe even subconscious notice of injury?3 AnswersInjuries6 years ago
…I have an irrational emotional attachment to my 1992 Mazda B2200 cab-plus pickup. I love it like crazy! it's teal blue, and I've always kept it in showroom condition. My local mechanic says it's a beauty. He says if I ever wanted to sell it , he'd be glad to display it on his lot and take a cut for commission. Over the years I've had numerous strangers offer to buy it from me. I think it's something like a classic. Mazda quit making that model that year, so it's the last of a breed.
Problem is this: at 22 yrs, it's starting to cost me _at least_ $1,000 in annual repairs. It's got over 220,000 clicks on the odometer. Still, after a tuneup it runs like a dream.
But In 2012 I finally paid-off my mortgage and credit cards. Being debt-free feels GREAT!
As much as I I don't want to, I know I'll end up having to pay for a new vehicle soon. Or will I? Maybe I should just keep maintaining the Mazda? But that annual $1,000+ is starting to bug me. I think I need to have a talk with myself.
It's been so long since I've shopped for a vehicle, I'm totally out of touch with the marketplace. I see ads all over offering to lease new vehicles instead of buying.
But which is better Lease, or buy?
I would want another small truck or SUV, as I do like the ability to carry large cargo items. I could afford to get something nice, but since becoming debt-free, I hate the thought of going back into big debt again. I want something economical.
Any suggestions?5 AnswersBuying & Selling6 years ago
….or should I destroy them? I have mostly petunias in my garden. Are snails going to eat my plants?
These snails have circular, curled shells - like conch shells - and they are green. Yuck!
