According to a variety of historical sources it was and always have been a sport.
Origin of 'MMA'
Jeff Blatnick was responsible for the sport adopting the name Mixed Martial Arts. Previously marketed as NHB, Blatnick and John McCarthy proposed the name 'MMA' at the UFC 17 rules meeting in response to increased public criticism. The term is generally attributed to Howard Rosenberg.
Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground, from a variety of other combat sports. Various mixed style contests took place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s. The combat sport of vale tudo that had developed in Brazil from the 1920s was brought to the United States by the Gracie family in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is nothing new. The only thing new about MMA is the money and media exposure that the sport has recently enjoyed. Before the introduction of modern weaponry into warfare every successful culture whether Eastern or Western had it’s own form of martial arts or it could not survive. Most civilizations developed combat sports as well. Martial sports were developed for entertainment during peace time and to keep warriors fit and ready for war time. -
"It’s the fastest growing spectacle in the world today. Dana White built a great entertaining program, but it just doesn’t have the same educational value that it had before. We had a competition between martial arts, and now we have a competition between athletes. Everybody learned jiu-jitsu as I planned when I came to America. Today, my goal is to help people change their lives with the Gracie Diet."
Modern MMA began in 1993 with the UFC. The creator dreated rules to make bjj look good against other styles and wanted to show weaknesses in striking. They also lied and said a street fighter had a black belt in TKD but had no martial arts training.
Rorion Graci used this sport to help introduce bjj to America and the world. He accomplished his goal. MMA is an great entertaining sport. The term was created by Jeff Blatnic
What is it about TMA that other are jealous of that causing them to attack TMA? Are people that intimidated by things other than what they like?
I recent article talks about the bickering between mma and boxing. Those on yahoo answers have seen similar ignorant attacks from fan boy and want to be fighter attack TMA? We know it is sad but it happens. The writer says this is fueled by ignorance.
I wonder if anyone can give a good answer that is factually stated as to why it is a common thing for people to attack things that are bigger, greater, or that have more history than themselves.
TMA is not going anywhere. It has been here for a very long time and will continue.
If you come to attack TMA or those that train in it please provide detailed documentation from scholarly sources as to why you believe what you do.Wikipedia, youtube, etc are not scholarly sources.22 AnswersMartial Arts7 years ago

How many instructors in Okinawan or Japanese martial arts believe that their students talk like this when referring to them?

Another sad in the martial arts community. She did a lot for the art of judo. She suffered through discrimination for being a woman. She wasn't allowed to marry and compete. She was allowed to have a high rank because of her gender. But she persevered and still obtained the ranks.7 AnswersMartial Arts8 years ago
This thought came to me a week or so ago.. I realize no one has taught me this. I don't know if there is a rule for this.
What side should you wear the bars on your black belt?
I'm not sure there is a rule for this. The Okinawan and Japanese are sticklers for many things. It may be possible there is a rule for wearing your bars.13 AnswersMartial Arts8 years ago
I know it is long. I'm not impressed with the video myself, but It could just be me or my tastes. I've met the instructor on several occasions. I believes he knows a lot. But he blows his own horn a little too much for me. But again I do think he has some knowledge. Think instructor is the guy with the limp.
I turned the volume off to watch it.11 AnswersMartial Arts8 years ago
I found this today. Some may have seen it before, but I discovered it by accident.5 AnswersMartial Arts8 years ago
