Best answer: I saw a TV program only recently that laid the blame for obesity on the huge amounts of sugar our modern diets include. Nearly all processed foods contain sugar to make them tasty so people will buy them. Even the supposed healthy foods from Subway have high levels of sugar in the breads and that is why their brad rolls taste so good. You walk into a supermarket and see row after row of sugar and fat disguised as snack foods and sodas. I read the side of a 250ml (very small coke) the other day and it had 100 calories in it. Many people consume a litre or more of coke a day and that is 400 to 500 calories a day just in coke. Then they eat cookies and cake, chips, sweets and soon a person has consumed 1500 calories of junk food and then we eat our meals on top of that. An adult male's calorie intake is supposed to be around 2,200 calories a day and we eat that as meals then we eat all this other junk on top of that and suddenly we are eating way above the calories we were ever designed to consume during a normal day. All that unused sugar and fat goes straight into body fat.
We start with a sugary cereal for breakfast or some of those stupid sugar based breakfast foods that Americans think are healthy. If it tastes sweet you are being fed rubbish. Many cereals are 50% sugar and have little else of nutritional benefit. The only real healthy food at your supermarket are the meat, the fruit and vegetables, some milk, and wholemeal or multigrain breads and flour. Nearly everything else is full of sugar or fat. Even those supposed low fat foods are now being seen as unhealthy and there is a belief as they do not fill you up properly so you tend to eat more. To give the low fat food more taste as they took out the delicious fat and replaced it with heaps of sugar to make it taste it ok. Yes most of those supermarket manufactured boxes and jars of sauces and foods are full of sugar. The TV show said we eat 4 times as much sugar per person in my country than is considered safe and the US is way worse. It is as much all those supermarket bought foods that are making us fat. You walk down long aisles of sodas, chips, cookies, chocolates and sweets, which are all the last thing we should be gorging on. Yes many eat too much take away food which again is laced with fat and sugar and generally in the US offered in grossly oversized serves with huge sodas. Then there is the US obsession with those sugar covered treats such as donuts and cakes. When on a country drive how many rest stops have a place selling healthy food. it is all McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, and a heap of other fattening food outlets.
We have stopped cooking complete meals at home. So many people eat pre-prepared meals from the supermarket or use supermarket bought pre prepared sauces or mixes to make meals simpler at home. To be healthy we must leave the fatty and sugary rubbish sold in supermarkets and start using natural, ingredients again as grandma used to do. Use meat and vegetables and eat fruit for desserts.
We tend to blame the fast food industry for the obesity epidemic but we have allowed food manufacturers to lure us into believing their foods are safe and nutritious when in reality they are full of fat and sugar. In the old day a food shop sold basic ingredients and mom made nutritious meals at home for the family. Now these food shops have become huge supermarkets which largely sell unhealthy fattening sugar laden pre-prepared foods. People have been swayed by convenience and manufactured taste and have forgotten that good food also tastes good and just takes a but more effort to make.
I went to a school of 600 students back in the 1970s. We had 3 fat kids in our school and the rest were healthy. There were no nut allergies or kids with Asthma and kids were slim and very active. They played in creeks and rode bikes all day and played sport on Saturday. There were no computers, cell phones, game machines or videos so during the day kids did activities. They went home to meals of meat and vegetables and may have got a small dessert after. There were no burger joints or pizza places. A treat was a once in a while soda (maybe once a week) and we only saw chips at parties.
Now there are fat kids every were all sitting down not doing any activities. scoffing bags of chips and sweets as they gulp down sodas. You see moms at the supermarkets with trolleys full of sodas and chips and other fattening rubbish. Many use these fattening snacks as baby sitters to keep their little obese Johnny happy and quiet. Few kids belong to a sports team these days and the only exercise they get operating the hand consoles of their games machines.

In a film, actor Charles Coburn plays an elderly "uncle" criticised for marrying a woman when he is 3 times her age. He replies "in 30 years I shall only be twice her age". Using algebra, how old is the uncle and the woman? Okay I know she is 30 and he is 90, but what equation would I use?
