I know almost all of you think you can prove your existence by saying that. Often, however, circular reasoning is more subtle than this: it depends on an assumption not stated but assumed. Consider the famous argument of the French philosopher, René Descartes: "I think, therefore I am." Descartes has begged the question here, because when he said "I think," he'd already implied "I am" (or how else could he think?). Yet his fallacy continues to persuade people, over three hundred years later. Your thoughts?

  • Did Socrates say: I think therefore I am, or was it really Descartes as some people now claim?

A proffessor in South Africa has recently claimed on national TV that Socrates actually made this statement and not Rene DesCartes as is generally accepted.

Just a few hours ago I answered a question about the book 1984 and I said I thought a lot of what George Orwell predicted has come true. One of the slogans of 1984 was 'War is Peace'. And the American people have been sold this lie over and over. Vietnam was one good example. We were told we were killing women and children in Vietnam for 'peace'. But it was actually the opposite of peace. There was a bumper sticker in those days that said "Bombing to End War is like F**king to End Sex".

We tend to see peace as the ultimate reward for war, the reason we fight wars, even unnecessary ones. We are destroying peace to reach peace. Lennon pointed this out in many ways, including his song 'Give Peace a Chance'.
