Start out at the bottom where you have the ability to watch and learn from the seasoned professionals - in a high end company that caters to high end clients. Your reputation is going to be everything, and so will be your skills. There is a lot of context, inside knowledge and etiquette you need to learn from being in with that.
Get yourself a really nice suit, and find the best companies around. Ask the biggest dogs in the pack for an informational interview and buy them a decent lunch. Ask them how to go about this, and whether they would recommend that you do. Someone may see you for a talent and take you under their wing, and if they don't, you will still have the opportunity to see them in action even with you. that sort of experience is never a waste of time or money or effort. And who knows, you might get hooked up with someone really good. if they think you're quick enough, they may want to keep you close, rather than finding you to be the competition later. They may also need some slave labor.
Regardless of the reason, do what you can to charm your way into a big name firm, even if they have you making copies. That on your background and having your ear to the ground can be worth a lot. Go ask in person, remember that the lowliest of workers can make a difference, and you are always being watched- in the parking lot, while you're waiting, and across the street. Be "on" from the time you leave your house, and treat everyone like they own the place.
You have a couple of years before you can actually do the job, so the more you can marinate in the business, the better. Go start at the top and find somewhere to do that. It will give you a chance to either flourish or decide you want to do something else. Even if you decide against it, this will all be education you will use for a lifetime. Go rub elbows with the professionals, but start with the best you can find.
