• Should I go to school tomorrow? Half day?

Tomorrow is a half day in school, I'm in 9th grade, I am not sure if they'll be counting attendance...But I'd imagine not because we're not even going to all our classes. Just like 2/4. Should I stay home, even if I am uncertain about attendance and it's just a half day? What would you do...... show more

My family has had a very unexpected passing only 7 weeks ago. My sister died in her sleep at 18, just after finishing high school, and with no warning. I'm in college and am able to take classes from home or skip a semester altogether if I need to, but my younger brother is still in high school and has no options like mine. He went to this school with my sister the previous year on top of that. Even looking at the building makes me feel horrible, but he has to be there nearly 8 hours everyday. The first week was okay. But my brother's depression over school has rapidly increased and he hates it there. He cries and gets angry. He literally said this morning that he "despises" his school. He's 15. He has no friends in any of his classes or his lunch. He's alone all day. We hoped the counselor would create his schedule to include his friends for support but that did not happen. We don't know what to do. I don't want to lose my brother because of his stupid, non-supportive high school and crappy teenagers. I don't know if there are any programs, any other options, or just anything anyone knows about that could help. We're desperate.

It's my first year of middle school, sixth grade. School started only a few weeks ago so I'm surprised to be saying I already have experience with bullying. Unfortunately for me, these actions reoccur nearly every day by the same group of 8th graders. Let me start off by saying these "kids" have mustaches and look like they could easily be 20. I'm not even exaggerating, they're like 6 feet tall and quite intimidating. On the bus, they're even wilder. Every day on the way home, they sit near me and make fun of the way I dress, call me ugly, a baby, tell me to "Turn around" then take stuff from my backpack, and sometimes even force me to sit on the floor of the bus when there aren't many seats available. It's an absolute nightmare and my shyness definitely gets in the way of me defending myself. I'm aware their behavior is unacceptable and I could get them in trouble if I reported them. Do you think I should? If the bullying persists, I think I'll have no other alternative. Another reason I don't do anything back to them is because they're bad people. When you get on their bad side, it would only make the problem worse. They just want recognition, right? Bullies are attention seekers. Nonetheless, their actions irritate me more than I could describe here. They call me a "nerd with no life" and insult me for being a loner. They make fun of the books I read and pretty much anything I like. I want to stop taking the bus but my parents won't allow it

  • Should tax contributions towards free school and free healthcare be optional?

Best answer: Based on your option then childless couples and single people should not pay taxes for schools either. Same with people who have children that are grown up.

    Everyone benefits from education. Everyone.

Best answer: No. I was not a popular kid in high school. Wasn't really a loser, but certainly wasn't cool. I was just kinda there, stuck in the middle and I'm not even sure people even knew I existed. I went on to earn by BS and MS and graduated both with honors. I am now considered a subject matter expert in my field and have received numerous honors and awards for exceptional service to the nation.

By contrast most of the cool kids I went to school with are still stuck in our hometown bouncing around paycheck to paycheck. Many are addicted to heroin and many have 3-4 children from 3-4 different fathers/mothers. A few of them have died from drug abuse or suicide and those that did make it out of that small farming town are struggling to make ends meet.

There are some other successful people I went to school with but largely it's the nerdy kids, or the invisible kids that made it in life. The lesson here is don't peak too soon. If you peak in high school the only direction you have to do is down, down, down.

Maybe it's the social aspect of it or maybe just the entire freaking thing. I hate waking up early. I hate homework. I hate PEOPLE. I have never understood the popularity thing. Like what's the big deal?? I hate having to look decent. I look like absolute garbage when I go there and I can't be myself. The only reason I go is to get a college degree when I'm older. It stresses me out so much. I feel so much better in the summer. I hate the mornings and look forward to the afternoon everyday. I'm also depressed, just to add on. Sometimes I wish we were homeschooled, you know? How do I pull through this year. I barely make it out alive the other years.
