I am an avid chess player and i am worried about the rapid decline of chess these days. Why do you think the popularity is declining? My answer: I think chess was used as a political tool during the cold war era. It's popularity during the cold war era was unprecedented. Espicially after the 72 match with spassky and fischer, chess memberships everywhere doubled and chess in the mainsteam was at it's height. Because of this chess was never marketed commercially, it was only a political tool, which would decline as political strifes ended. And since it was never commerciliazed properly, it would remain a game that is virtually unknown to the newer generation. And because of this ignorence, the game has many tags which disassosiate it with mainsteam culture. Nerdiness, old people's game, too complex for the average mind etc...

Anyways, I have an idea for a strategy game, (Like European War 4) But instead of training soldiers like you do in that game, you get soldiers from your citizens like in real life. I mean like you can make propaganda, draft soldiers, and many more things governments do now-a-days to get more soldiers in their military. Just a cool thought I know its extremely flawed just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas to roast me for

Hey everyone. I am a new player to chess and I want to take the game more seriously. I have been searching around online for an all in one type of course. Basically, I want to have a go to website to learn most chess strategies and tactics. I plan to read a few books from the library, but I want most of my training to come from online. So I am looking for a website that has chronological lessons that take you from beginner to advanced, and I can work through them at my own pace and steadily improve. I also want to play games against real people as well. Also having tactics puzzles would be nice. I am willing to pay for a monthly/yearly fee if I have to. What would you recommend for having the best resources, lessons, and online gameplay?

  • Has anyone finished monopoly? If so, how long did it take and did you play by the rules?

Best answer: We played by the rules. There were 4 of us. Somehow, it took 3 hours. Bear in mind, any monopoly game has a 12% chance to never finish.

  • How do I achieve stalemate with a king against a king and a rook?

Best answer: It'd take a terrible mistake on the behalf of the opponent to do it, one possible scenario would be: White's move puts his king at A6 Black's move puts his king at A8. Best answer: It'd take a terrible mistake on the behalf of the opponent to do it, one possible scenario would be:
White's move puts his king at A6
Black's move puts his king at A8.
If white can now move his rook to rank 8, then it's checkmate. If however he moved it to threaten column B, it will then be a stalemate. While your king is in that corner, he has all the time he needs to get the rook into place - his king can keep yours pinned at rank 8. So it would take an incredibly short-sighted opponent to make that mistake no matter how good you are.

  • Im a noob at chess, could you give me feedback on this game please? It ended in a draw... and I wanna know what mistakes I made?

Best answer: Step one: actually play yourself instead of having an engine play.

What you have there is a game played by two moderately strong engines.

Black seemingly plays the opening badly but manages somehow to transpose into an obscure line last played by a 2400 that's actually pretty decent for black. That would take either decades of playing the French or incredible luck but would be very easy for a computer.

24...Qd8 doesn't look like a human move. Moving a piece back to the square it started on for no obvious reason is something most human players will avoid. Humans tend to think in generalities and rules of thumb but a computer will play the best move regardless of how it looks.

I'm looking at the game with Stockfish and there is very little variation in the evaluation. With human players even very good ones there is typically a lot more.

I'm sure I could find more if I spent time on it but what's the point?
