It's only at night time when i've turned all the lights of and got into and been in bed for about 10mins. I tell him off but he doesn't seem to care. Last two days i have been ignoring him when he does it and i've not even been telling him off and, he does it less. I think i've worked out it's just for attention. To be honest he is a needy cat anyway and he is always following me or laying watching me. I mean to the point he sits on my lap when im on the toilet. Does anyone know why he does thia apart from what i mentioned above? Also how can i stop him doing it? A friend said that i should put double sided tape on the area as, it would get stuck on cats paws when trying to scratch and they wont like. It has been a week and not worked so far. I have read that feliway classic spray is meant to be good although, i have not used it so i have no idea. Does anyone reconmend it? I'd like to know before i buy as it's almost £30 a spray. I know in the long run it's cheaper than a new carpet but still.

My boyfriend and I broke up and he literally abandoned his dog. It's sad. He wants nothing to do with me or his dog. So, I'm keeping her! I want to rename her. She's 7 months old. She's gone by the name "Snuffles" (I hate the name) if I rename her will she eventually learn her new name?

Best answer: Positive rewards when a dog complies with what's being asked of them, and corrections when it doesn't comply. So, I don't believe in positive ONLY training. It's my opinion that a dog can't learn that it's doing something wrong if there isn't any consequences for it's poor behavior or actions. If someone is training a dog to not jump up on people, I'm not going to wait for it to stop jumping and then give them a reward. I'm going to make SURE they get a firm correction so they can LEARN they aren't suppose to jump on people. THEN when the dog understands what it's got a correction for is when praise will be given.

Edit: What's the TD for? If your child was running in the street right into moving traffic, would you wait to see if it got hit by a car or would you go out and grab that kid and tell them they could get killed, and possibly give them a swat on the butt? Believe it not CORRECTIONS CAN SAVE LIVES. If a person never had to pay any consequences for doing something illegally, they would keep doing illegal things until they were caught and had to pay the consequences. Why would someone want their dog to jump on people until they knocked that person down, possibly causing serious injury? Example: If I were walking my 72 lb. Dobe on a leash and she jumped on someone, she WOULD BE YAKKED RIGHT OFF OF THAT PERSON so that she COULD LEARN A LESSON. A person could fall down and break a hip for Heaven's sake, so that dog's bad behavior NEEDS to be stopped IMMEDIATELY.

Letting a dog get away with anything they wanted to could possibly lead to that dog not even being able to be a normal well behave family pet. Would you want a dog to steal Thanksgiving dinner off of your table? No you wouldn't, so you'd have to TEACH IT TO NOT TAKE FOOD OFF OF THE TABLE. Would you want your dog to devour your new $2,000.00 sofa? No you wouldn't so it MUST learn not to chew on furniture, right? How will you stop the dog from chewing on the furniture if it doesn't receive SOME SORT of correction for doing so when you catch it in the act? Would you just let the dog EAT THE COUCH causing an intestinal blockage, have to pay $4,000.00 to have the blockage surgically removed, and then give the dog a treat when it comes home from the Vet? Come on! Nobody could possibly want that to happen! Dog training is NOT ONLY about positive training, and anybody who thinks it is must have a screw loose. Sorry but true.

Being a dog's leader IS about consequences AND rewards. BOTH are needed!
