Why are aunts and uncles referred to by both their relation to you, as well as their name?
With other relatives, you only use one or the other. With grandparents, you only use their relation, or a variant of the word, and with siblings and cousins, only their name. So, why are both used when it comes to aunts and uncles?

How do you find out about a grandparent without opening up old wounds?
I want to learn more about my ancestry, but my grandfather on my fathers side is not something we really talked about.
He wasn't in my dad's life for the most part, and I don't want to ask questions about it, because I don't know if he died, or if he left my grandmother, and just knowing he wasn't there regardless is enough for me to not tread in that territory because there can't be a good reason.
I wish I could do this but I find it difficult.

What do you think my dad's ethnic heritage is?
We have a surname that could be from anyplace, I guess. I don't know much about our background. I asked my dad what our family heritage is, but he just said "We're American." What nationality do you think his ancestors came from?

Italians, are you white?
I'm born and raised from Brooklyn, my dad's entire family is 100% Italian. I grew up in a pretty mixed neighborhood and I have lot of black friends. I have one older neighbor who always tells me that Italians aren't actually white, and that we deny our "blackness". I don't understand what he is talking about. Nobody else has ever thought I or my family was anything but white? Is there any truth to what he is saying? Any fellow Italians with an opinion?
