In the early days of television there was a Channel 1. In 1945, when the Federal Communications Commission first allotted broadcast frequencies, about a dozen stations around the country were assigned to use Channel 1, 44 to 50 megahertz.

However, in 1949, the FCC decided that television, which takes up a lot more space on the broadcast spectrum than radio does, had more than its share of the airways. So it took Channel 1 away from television and gave it to radio.

Channel 1 on your television is not to be confused with channelone that the kids watch at school. That is a free satellite video system and not television.

Hehe! Thats a good question! Sorry, I don't know the correct answer but maybe the same reason there is no page 1 in a book either.

It has to do with Channel one being kept open during war times in the past. It's kept clear. The frequency is for military and police communication.

Channel 1 was dropped way back during the very early stages of television, about 1948. Follow this link for additional information:

Same reason there was never a channel 0. The signals will cross and not return anything.

Good question, I think the other channels might fight over being channel 1 because they all want to be #1...

It has to do with the FEC frequency allocation between FM and those used in TV (RF spectrum allotment)

There is! It's a closed-circuit news program for schoolchildren.
