First, to destroy the Disney bubble: Pocahontas (birth name: Matoaka) never married John Smith. Certainly, she participated in her tribe's version of baptism (the "inductee's" head is placed on a flat surface, tribesmen act as if they are going to club the inductee to death, a member of the tribe covers the inductee's head with his/her body as a sign of adopting the inductee into the tribe, the inductee is "spared" an welcomed as a member), but the two never fell in love to live happily ever after. Pocahontas first married a fellow Indian named Kocoum, was kidnapped for ransom, and then married John Rolfe as a "peace-making marriage," but only after she had converted to Christianity for the "honor of the kingdom." and changed her name to Rebbecca. She was presented to the Queen of England (to satisfy curiosity of what a "savage" looked like and that they could be trained to become civil), and died at 22 from possible pneumonia or tuberculosis as they set sail for Virginia.
