Dad just finished his first round of chemo. We found out a week and a half ago, that he even had leukemia. As for genetics, acute myloid leukemia (AML), it is not, nor is it contagious. The odd are the same as child hood, but diminish greatly with age and health.

If you are doing a project, there are many, many sites if you just google leukemia, believe me, I have learned more about the disease in a week just finding out Dad has it.

There is really no time to prepare for this cancer, as once it is diagnosed, it is within days chemo starts. It is extremely aggressive chemo, Dad has to spend over a month in the hospital due to infection control. The chemo kills all the blood cells, good and bad, and then the body has to make its own again, that takes a minimum of 10 days. Patients are at extreme risk for infection (flu, cold, etc.), but have no white blood cells to fight infection, so a simple cold could lead to death.

Good luck to you, and we are still rooting for Dad, day 11 of a 30 day treatment.

I hardly know anything about it other than the fact that I think my great-grandmother died from it in her mid-nineties.
