Good question. According to the Journal of Construction Education, a standard 1500 square foot, 3-bedroom, one-story gable house with slab-on-grade foundation in Florida (building codes make a difference) takes about 400 board feet of lumber.
According to a paper authored by David B South (Professor School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences and Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station Auburn University, AL), a typical 10 year old Southern Pine might have a diameter at breast height of 10 in and height of 53.5 ft.
According to the About:Lumber timber calculator, using the above Southern Pine, we would get about 75 board feet (using the International Rule) per tree.
So it would take around 5.3 of these trees to build the house we described above.Source(s): Journal of Construction Education: http://www.ascjournal.ascweb.org/journal/1997/no2/... "...It varies considerably.
According to the Idaho Forest Products Commission, a typical 2000 square foot house requires 26,700 board feet.
An "average" tree with a 20 inch diameter and 42 linear feet of usable wood generates approximately 260 board feet.
Doing the math indicates about 102 trees for that house.
Other organizations in the lumber industry state different numbers, some as low as 30 trees for a 1500 square foot house while some state 60 trees for a 2000 square foot house."
I took the liberty of copying and pasting this from another website. It gave (in my opinion) a very good general answer to this very general question. What seems to be the one consistent component when looking into this myself, was that the answer varies widely... so maybe a better question to pose is a more specific variation of the original. Like: how many trees would it take to build a 2,000 sq ft home in (pick any state) say, California? You'll get a more accurate answer if youre more specific.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/U7lsY
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.
